THAT'S THE REASON

Ronn

1966 - August 1973

Crockett ("It's a man down there"). King, Buster propose ses premières réussites : "Erase my name", "Looking for my baby", "Hole in my head".

Spotted by Willie Dixon, he will be a regular guitarist of his Chicago All-Stars band. Dixon will allow him to record the famous hit "Spider in my stew" in june 1973 for the Supreme label. With the money generated by this success, he bought the Stardust Lounge, a club of the south side of Chicago.

THE ALL-STARS BLUES WORLD OF MAESTRO WILLIE DIXON

Spivey

August 1973

With his Chicago All-Stars band, Willie Dixon has recorded regularly for the Spivey label. Among the many important bluesmen gone through this training, there was Buster Benton for several years. In this LP, he played three beautiful tracks as a leader with great musicians (Willie Dixon, Lafayette Leake, Carey Bell). His rendition of "The thrill is gone" is remarkable. This LP has never been reissued on CD.

SPIDER IN MY STEW

Ronn

BLUESBUSTER

Red Lightnin'

June 1973 - June 1978

Produced by Ralph Bass in 1978 for the Miami-based TK imprint, tapes were redeemed by Ronn (a subsidiary of Jewel) and Red Lightnin'. Ronn edited them in the "Spider in my stew" LP and Red Lightnin' on "Bluesbuster". Therefore, both discs are almost similar. Apart from the 1978 session took on both albums, the Ronn version adds singles "Spider in my stew", "Dangerous woman" , "Going fishin'" and "Money's the name of the game" while the Red Lightnin' only takes "Spider in my stew". Here, Buster Benton is accompanied by some great musicians like Mighty Joe Young, Jimmy Johnson, Carey Bell, Lafayette Leake, Ray Allison, Ron Scott, Nolan Struck. Most titles (often his own compositions) are memorable either as pure blues "Spider in my stew", "Born with the blues", "Sorry", "Lonesome for a dime", "Dangerous woman" or when he ventured on rhythmic tinged soul-funk like "Sweet 94", "Love like I wanna" and "Disco blues". Irresistible.

BUSTER BENTON IS THE FEELING

Ronn

1981

Often pleasant, this album never finds the magic of previous recordings. For this one, Buster is his own producer and the backing band remains broadly unchanged (Carey Bell, Lafayette Leake, Ron Scott, Jimmy Johnson). Again, it varies from pure blues ("The feeling", "Get away", "Judge give me time") and funkier tracks ("Dancing music", "Breaking up") but the whole is less dense, less powerful than before. Buster himself seems not in voice and his guitar remains discreet.

Atlas

November 1983

Il reprend correctement ses propres compositions "I must have a hole in my head" et "Money's the name of the game".

During his first European tour at the end of 1983, Buster finds himself in a parisian studio with touring musicians (John Littlejohn, Joe Beard, Lafayette Leake, Bob Stroger, Odie Payne). The result is pretty nice. He correctly covers his own compositions "I must have a hole in my head" and "Money's the name of the game". Biting guitar and always good singer, Buster gives an honorable blues record. Point out to those who do not know that to listen to the entire album, there is no other choice than the first edition. The three successive editions (Evidence, Black & Blue, Atlas) do have only a few titles gathered with all the following album (though less accomplished).

Quelques bons moments comme "Blues and trouble", "From Missouri" et "That's your thing" rehaussent un peu cet album sans grande saveur. A noter "Can't wait to see my baby's face" simple démarquage du "Never make a move too soon" de B.B. King.

For this second european album, Buster plays with the Sons of the Blues led by the very (too much ?) present Billy Branch on harp. The album suffers from a lack of originality and may seem routine. Some good moments like "Blues and disorder", "From Missouri" and "That's your thing" enhance a bit this flavorless album. Note "Can't wait to see my baby's face" mere transformation of "Never make a move too soon" by B.B. King.

WHY ME

Ichiban

1988

On retrouve de nouvelles versions de "Can't wait to see my baby's face", "From Missouri" et une reprise sympathique de "Lonesome for a dime".

This is his first record at Ichiban and his best for this label. Buster, alongside with producer Gary B.B. Coleman, opts for a dynamic soul-blues sound. New versions of "Can't wait to see my baby's face", "From Missouri" and a nice cover of "Lonesome for a dime". The set does not lack of unity and is worth listening. The formula will be repeated almost identically, in his next opus with less success.

MONEY'S THE NAME OF THE GAME

Ichiban

1989

A l'opposé, son "As the years go passing by" bizarrement arrangé n'est guère convaincant.

For his Ichiban second album, Buster Benton is always surrounded by the producer and guitarist Gary B.B. Coleman. Coleman has opted for a curious production giving the drummer a very clear and present sound, which is not the best effect. Therefore, this calibrated soul-blues album shows few surprise. His versions of "You accuse me" and "Sweet Sixteen" are the most blues songs and the most effective. On the contrary, "As the years go passing by" oddly arranged is truly unconvincing.

I LIKE TO HEAR MY GUITAR SING

Ichiban

1991

Third and last record for Ichiban, it uses the same formula as previous releases with a soul-blues-funk sound produced and calibrated by Gary B.B. Coleman. This time, the band is enhanced with a brass section (incidentally rather well arranged) and singers. Unfortunately, Benton's guitar is often silent. Brassy ballad "A woman can't live on love alone" is relatively pleasant and the cover of "Dust my broom" atypical. The rest seems pretty routine.
