WEST COAST GUITAR KILLERS vol.2

El Segundo

May 1956

We find in this Charly CD, Cal Green's second single recorded for Federal in january 1958, including the incisive and exciting instrumental "The big push". Unfortunately, this early career stops short in 1959 because of a sentence to 21 months in prison due to possession of marijuana. When released, Cal finds again Hank Ballard for a few months. Then, he heads more particularly to jazz and moved to Los Angeles, California occasionally accompanying Charles Kynard or Jack Mac Duff.

TRIPPIN' WITH CAL GREEN

Mutt & Jeff

P-Vine

1969 ?

Recorded about 1969, this is an instrumental jazz album in which Cal is accompanied by true jazz musicians like Charles Kynard (piano, organ), Tracy Wright (bass) and Billy Moore (drums). Today, this LP has become a sought rarity (like the japanese CD reissue of P-Vine). Cal shows his remarkable skills on guitar influenced by Wes Montgomery. Therefore, it is far from the blues here and it will recommend this album to jazz guitar lovers.

WHITE PEARL

Double Trouble

March 1988

After years of absence, Cal Green is back with an album, this time actually rooted in the blues (but tinged with jazz at times). Accompanied by Sammy D. (saxophone), Chuck Rowan (piano, organ), Mike Saucier (bass) and Roscoe Riley (drums), he offers an album of great diversity for the Double Trouble imprint (a label that had already recorded his brother Clarence Green in the previous year). Subtlety and inspiration on guitar are constantly renewed on tracks like "Big leg woman", "Greasy spoon" and "Mister Silk". His singing seems, on the contrary, more limited.
