THE COUNTRY BLUES

Storyville

October 1959

Self-taught on guitar, Clarence learned music by listening to old records of her grandmother in particular those of Charley Patton. His large family (Clarence has fourteen brothers and sisters) moved in Alsen, north of Baton Rouge around 1945. Aged twenty years, Clarence starts to perform in the club circuit with an obscure local band, the Boogie Beats (with his brother Cornelius). Later, he joined the Bluebird Kings. To earn his living, he worked in a scrapyard, a job he kept for over thirty years. His first recordings date back to october 1959 when he was discovered by Harry Oster. There are field recordings assembled in Zachary (in the Butch Cage's house) with participations of Butch Cage, Willie Thomas, Clarence Edwards. The latter is present on three tracks in the Folk-Lyric LP. But on the Arhoolie CD reissue, an additional title of Edwards has been added ("Thousand miles from nowhere"). In these four pieces, Clarence sings and plays guitar while he is accompanied by his brother Cornelius (guitar) and Butch Cage (violin ) in a string- bands style. We appreciate, in particular, a beautiful version of "Smokestack lightning". Storyville LP gathers unissued material from the same session (6 additional tracks).

June 1961

De ses quatre morceaux, on peut ressortir les magnifiques "Can't stand to be your dog" et "I got a coal black mare".

In this anthology issued by Flyright is collected another session from june 1961. Clarence was accompanied only by Butch Cage on violin. LOUISIANA BLUES 1970

Arhoolie

April 1970

Recorded in Baton Rouge, produced by Chris Strachwitz and Terry Pattison, this anthology was a good overview of the Louisiana scene of the time. It was pointing spotlights on local artists (seldom recorded). As leader of a small electrical band, Clarence is represented by two magnificent down-home and dynamic tracks : "Hear that rumbling" and "How many more years". Clarence also accompanies the pianist Henry Gray.

During these sessions, supervised by Mike Vernon and Terry Pattison, Clarence lives in Alsen (north of Baton Rouge). Of the four remarkable songs played by Clarence, there are two where he is accompanied, again, by small electric backing band (the powerful "Let me love you") and two in an acoustic configuration (the serene "Cooling board").

In this concert captured at the Speak-Easy in Baton Rouge, there are few regional artists (Silas Hogan, Arthur "Guitar" Kelley) including Clarence Edwards. You hear two unconvincing tracks ("Do you wanna jump children" and "Coolin' board") : monolithic rhythm and detached voice.

February 1990

Heavy and exciting music, thick voice, simplistic but sharp guitar, flexible and powerful rhythm section (Anthony Hardesty & Pick Delmore) : Here are a pure swamp-blues record inspired and varied. Perfect alternation of stimulants and powerful pieces ("Stoop down baby", "Chewing gum", "Walking the dog", "I want somebody", "Born with the blues") and some acoustic pieces ("Driving wheel" "Done got over it"), the disc had a real impact among the small circle of swamp-blues fans but was largely ignored by the public. Originally published by Sidetrack, it will still be taken up by the British firm Red Lightnin'. Note collaboration of his friend Henry Gray on piano, Michael Ward on violin but, above all, a brilliant harmonicist (Harmonica Red).

Cut during several recording sessions (including that of the previous album) we find the same musicians than in the excellent "Swamps the word" and covers of many titles featured in the latter. Among the novelties, we appreciate following tracks : "Tried so hard", "Sick n'tired" and the acoustic version of "Long distance call". But, this record is not as dense as "Swamps the word" despite real qualities.

April 1990 - 1991 ?

Qu'importe la configuration, la plupart des morceaux s'avèrent remarquables : "Coal black mare", "Don't play with my mistakes", "Don't got over".

The album includes two sessions cut in 1990-91 in Baton Rouge. In both cases, the proposed music is down-home and powerful. The first session - the best one - shows Clarence either as a leader of a trio composed by David Hill (bass) and Jess Kenchin (drums) or alone on guitar. Whatever the configuration is, most of the tracks are remarkable : "Coal black mare", "Don't play with my mistakes", "Don't got over". In the second session, we can point out the nice cover of "Driving wheel". The last two tracks are interpreted by Oscar "Harp" Davis.

Last Call

1990 - 1992 ?

L'ensemble est parfois hétérogène mais on note quelques franches réussites comme "She's fine, she's mine", "Trouble don't last" ou "Don't make me pay".

As Stephen Coleridge (who was his manager) recalled in the liner notes, it took all the stubbornness of Dick Waterman, Peter Lee and Coleridge himself to allow Clarence Edwards to appear in several festivals and to record a few discs as it was ignored in the recording industry. It is a collection of various records, probably post-1989, on stage and in studio offering a good overview of the music of this unknown bluesman. Sometimes uneven, there are some real interesting tracks such as "She's fine, she's mine", "Trouble don't last" or "Don't make me pay."
