Born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, he picks cotton at 6 and sings at church. But, Willie especially like to listen "King Biscuit Time" radio show on KFFA which broadcasts some bluesmen including "Sonny Boy" Williamson and Robert Nighthawk. He left home at 13 years old and joined Chicago in 1952 (after a short stay in Memphis and in Florida). He bought a guitar and learned the rudiments of instrument with Willie Hudson. The latter hired Kent in 1959 in his own group Ralph & The Red Tops, first as driver-singer. But, as his bassist liked too much drink, he gave him also the position of bassist while maintaining his singing duties. Later, Willie Kent formed his own group and performed in the club circuit of Chicago. Behind Jimmy Dawkins, he even participates in the American Folk Blues Festival 1972 tour. Between 1972 and 1978 he became a regular bluesman at Ma Bea's (on West Madison Street) often with his friend guitarist Willie James Lyons. Thanks to the French Marcelle Morgantini one of his live performances has been captured on disc. Singer with a strong voice, effective bassist Willie Kent here sharing the stage with guitarist Willie James Lyons. We are in the heart of Chicagoans clubs atmosphere. The title track is particularly beautiful but we can also include "You don't love me" or "Chili con carne" among others. Originally released by the french label MCM then reissued on CD by Storyville with some bonus tracks.

THE KING OF CHICAGO'S WEST SIDE BLUES

Wolf

August 1984 - April 1991

On note deux intéressantes reprises : "Boogie chillum" et "I got to go".

In 1981, Willie is a regular artist at Mary's Club Lounge with his new band The Gents. He performs there until 1987 while continuing his truck driver job (since already twenty years). Unfortunately, two years later, he underwent a triple bypass surgery that forced him to reduce his activity. He decided, then, to become a full-time musician, leaving his job as a truck driver. As often with Wolf, this is a collection of several sessions cut between 1984 and 1991, i.e. at the time when Willie decides to become a full-time musician. Willie was accompanied there by his usual musicians: Billy Branch, John Primer, Luther "Slim" Adams, Timothy Taylor (son of Eddie Taylor) with the exception of the first session in august 1984 where guitarists Eddie Taylor and Johnny B. Moore play behind him. The disc is heterogeneous due to these many different configurations and production sometimes flat. Overall a nice album but far from highest achievements. We note two interesting covers : "Boogie chillum" and "I got to go".

I'M WHAT YOU NEED

Big Boy

1986

This LP is, in fact, the first Willie Kent's american album. It is published by the Big Boy label run by DJ Big Bill Collins. Unfortunately, apart from the first song "Boogie all night long", a sort of boogie in a John Lee Hooker style, the content is really disappointing. The production and mixing seem very poor : too present horn section and strident guitars sometimes out of tune. This LP's achievement is really an amateurish work.

JOHN LITTLEJOHN'S BLUES PARTY

Wolf

February 1989

Malgré le fait que ce soit un album de John Littlejohn, Wolf a programmé deux bons morceaux de Willie Kent en leader : "One more mile" et "I'm your fool".

Despite the fact that this is an album of John Littlejohn, Wolf has scheduled two good tracks of Willie Kent as a leader : "One more mile" and "I'm your fool".

AIN'T IT NICE

Delmark

March 1991

A competent and experienced backing band with, in particular, a subtle pair of guitarists. Willie adds his strong and evocative vocals with his robust bass playing. There was also active participation of his friend Lester "Mad Dog" Davenport on harmonica and singer Bonnie Lee on "I'm good." The music is more traditional but interpreted with passion. This disc represents his first real achievement in studio.

LIVE AT BLUES

Wolf

July 1993

Captured on B.L.U.E.S. stage (a club in Chicago on North Halsted Street), Willie Kent and his band offers, in this CD, a great moment of pure Chicago blues. Vigorous boiling blues that leaves no one indifferent. The cohesion of the musicians is perfect. Mention again to guitarists Johnny B. Moore and Jacob Dawson who are particularly in sight. We note remarkable covers of "A man and the blues" and "Black Night" but remaining tracks deserve careful listening. It is constantly excellent. There is also friendly appearances by Bonnie Lee (who still sings "I'm good") and Eddie Shaw (on a beautiful cover of "Sadie" by Hound Dog Taylor).

TOO HURT TO CRY

Delmark

1993

Une nouvelle fois, Willie propose une très belle version de "A man and the blues" (reprise à Buddy Guy) mais beaucoup d'autres morceaux sortent du lot : "Just sitting here thinking", "Too hurt to cry" et le superbe "Good man feeling bad".

In this second album for Delmark, Willie takes benefit of an excellent production and perfect arrangements. Compared to previous albums, he is joined by a horn section led by Malachi Thompson. Once again, Willie offers a beautiful version of "A man and the blues "(covering Buddy Guy), but many other songs stand out : "Just sitting here thinking", "Too hurt to cry " and the beautiful "Good man feeling bad". His guitar (Jacob Dawson and Willie Davis) are always in the foreground. At the end of "Countdown," Willie thanks all his musicians.

BLUES AND TROUBLE

Isabel

March 1995

Cut in Nice, the album is predominantly composed of slow tempo blues tempo where Willie's expressive voice makes perfect meaning : "Troubles disorders", "Mean mistreatin' woman", "Come home". Strict and clean production of Didier Tricard (for his label Isabel) gives this album a deep bluesy sound. Musicians (The Gents) are still competent : Ken Barker (keyboards), Cleo Williams (drums) but especially the omnipresent and brilliant guitarists, Carlos Showers and Willie Davis.

EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY

Wolf

1995 - 1996

In this CD, we find 3 excellent tracks recorded in Chicago in 1996 (with the nice guitar of Jake Dawson) and also 9 uneven live tracks captured in Austria (we cannot hear the guitars on certain titles). A minor album to recommend above all to confirmed fans of Willie Kent.

LONG WAY TO OL'MISS

Delmark

August 1996

Le disque commence par trois morceaux remarquables - "Long way to Ol' Miss", "Blues in my bedroom", "Dirty works" - mais la suite est du même haut niveau (notamment "Don't know much about love" et son superbe solo de guitare ou "All my life").

Once again, these are Willie's musicians who bring that extra touch characteristic of the best blues records. Here, note especially guitarists Vernon "Chico" Banks and Willie Davis. The disc begins with three remarkable songs - "Long way to Ol 'Miss", "Blues in my bedroom", "Dirty works" - but the result is the same high level (including "Don't know much about love "and its superb guitar solo or "All my life"). In fact, no title is really bad. It's powerful and dynamic blues perfectly rendered by experienced musicians, all backed by the beautiful and strong-boned voice of Willie. Surely one of his best albums, if not the best.

CLARK STREET RAMBLERS

Blue Chicago

June - July 1997

Willie Kent (un habitué du club depuis 1985) joue "I wonder why" ainsi qu'une très belle version de "All night long".

THIS AIN'T NO TRIBUTE - SONGS OF JANIS JOPLIN

House of Blues

1997

In this unsuccessful tribute album dedicated to Janis Joplin, Willie performs "Trouble in mind" (an old jazz and blues standard).

MAKE ROOM FOR THE BLUES

Delmark

February 1998

New album on Delmark (with whom he has released only good albums), "Make room for the blues" differs from the previous CD (the boiling and irresistible "Long way to Ol'Miss") by a more sedate and serene atmosphere. But the disc also seems a little less inspired. However, listening is pleasant even though it lacks a bit of flame. There have been a small change in the band line-up with the addition of drummer James Carter (nephew of Willie Kent).

WHO'S BEEN TALKING

Earwig

1998

The combination of these two great exponents of the Chicago blues seemed very promising. And the disc is up to the waiting. Willie and Lil'Ed share singing and compositions. The blues is here, strong, vigorous perfectly rendered by a homogeneous group and a slick production. Lil'Ed compositions are particularly accomplished ("Someday" and "Going shopping") and some exciting covers make you dance : "Who's been talking", "My bleeding heart" and "Newspaper blues". We also note the contribution of Eddie C. Campbell, brilliant on guitar.

COMIN' ALIVE

Blue Chicago

2000 ?

Willie had, it seems, a new project on hold with Delmark (with whom he has released four discs) but it did not materialize. Finally, the opportunity finally came from Gino Battaglia (who runs Blue Chicago club and label). Willie had the possibility to record a new CD with all the necessary artistic freedom : he chose the young and beautiful guitarist Haguy F. King, he co-produced the disc (with the help of Haguy F. King and Twist Turner), hires a horn section and fills the album with accomplished original compositions : "Born in the Delta", "Look like it's gonna rain", "Sittin' here thinkin'" among others.

THE GREATS SITTIN' IN

Raisin Music

2001

This original project conceived and produced by Larry Skoller is in fact a tool for learning to play or sing the blues. Most tracks are either sung or played instrumentals allowing the beginner to add his voice or instrument on. Willie Kent sings four songs but played bass on only one. A perfectly realized intelligent and teaching tool.
