Né dans le 9ème arrondissement de La Nouvelle Orléans, il grandit directement en contact avec la musique. Alvin choisit le saxophone et démarre réellement après un passage dans la Navy entre 1945 et 1946. Il apprend son métier de musicien notamment dans l'orchestre de Dave Bartholomew mais aussi avec Jewel King, Huey "Piano" Smith, Little Richard. Devenu un des saxophonistes les mieux notés de la ville, il grave une poignée de titres pour le label Ace de Johnny Vincent, le plus souvent des instrumentaux Rhythm & Blues où brille sa technique. On peut retenir de cette petite oeuvre solo : "Stinky", "Dippy", "Long ride", "Lonely for you". En dépit de cette production personnelle intéressante, Alvin reste avant tout un sideman réputé.
Born in the 9th ward of New Orleans, he grew up directly in contact with music. Alvin chooses the saxophone and really starts after a passage in the Navy between 1945 and 1946. He learned his profession as a musician notably in Dave Bartholomew's orchestra but also with Jewel King, Huey "Piano" Smith, Little Richard. Became one of the city's highest-rated saxophonists, he cut a handful of tracks for Johnny Vincent's Ace label, most often Rhythm & Blues instrumentals where shines his technique. We can point out this little solo work : "Stinky", "Dippy", "Long ride", "Lonely for you". Despite this interesting personal production, Alvin remains before all a renowned sideman.
