Fils d'un prêcheur baptiste, Joe, originaire de l'Alabama, s'installe à Cincinnati avec sa famille alors qu'il est adolescent. Après la guerre, pendant une vingtaine d'années, il joue du piano dans les clubs de la région tout en travaillant dans les services postaux. Grâce à Steve Tracy et Ben Sandmel, Joe trouve l'opportunité d'entrer en studio pour la première fois. Ce disque reprend plusieurs séances gravées à Cincinnati et à Chicago. Il joue seul la plupart du temps mais est rejoint sur certains titres par un groupe complet (avec Jimmy Johnson et Bob Margolin). Un bon programme de piano blues classique avec de nombreuses reprises de standards. On peut entendre six titres supplémentaires dans la réédition CD.
The son of a baptist preacher, Joe, originally from Alabama, moved to Cincinnati with his family when he was a teenager. After the war, for twenty years, he played the piano in clubs in the region while working in the postal services. Thanks to Steve Tracy and Ben Sandmel, Joe finds the opportunity to enter the studio for the first time. This album includes several sessions engraved in Cincinnati and Chicago. He plays alone most of the time but is joined on some titles by a full band (with Jimmy Johnson and Bob Margolin). A good classical blues piano program with many standard covers. We can hear six additional titles in the CD reissue.

Pour celui-ci, le pianiste est entouré d'un beau groupe composé de Dave Peabody lui-même, Ian Jennings, Mickey Waller (ancien batteur de John Mayall et Jeff Beck), Paul Clarke et Alan Nicholls. Un programme entre Blues et Rhythm & Blues (avec l'ajout des cuivres) inspiré. On retient la chanson titre "Don't mess with the boogie man", "Big Joe's boogie prayer", "Dirty rat swing", "Cuban sugar mill", "Keep it to yourself", "Low down dog". Il s'agit certainement de son meilleur album.

For this one, the pianist is surrounded by a beautiful backing band composed by Dave Peabody himself, Ian Jennings, Mickey Waller (former drummer for John Mayall and Jeff Beck), Paul Clarke and Alan Nicholls. A really inspired program between Blues and Rhythm & Blues (with the addition of horns). We can point out the title song "Don't mess with the boogie man", "Big Joe's boogie prayer", "Dirty rat swing", "Cuban sugar mill", "Keep it to yourself", "Low down dog". It is certainly his best album.

Un album très inégal enregistré dans une église méthodiste de Cincinnati. Big Joe possède désormais une voix affaiblie et son répertoire est resté inchangé toutes ces années. De plus, ses accompagnateurs (parmi lesquels Peter Frampton) ne semblent guère inspirés. Uniquement pour les fans inconditionnels du pianiste.
A very uneven album recorded in a methodist church in Cincinnati. Big Joe now has a weakened voice and his repertoire has remained unchanged all these years. Moreover, his companions (among which Peter Frampton) do not seem inspired. Only for hardcore fans of the pianist.
