Le Big Four Blues Band était composé de Steve Freund, Bob Stroger, Robert Covington et Sam Burckhardt. "Going to Chicago" est leur unique album studio (alors que le groupe a tourné un peu partout jusqu'en Europe). Cet album fut enregistré en Allemagne et produit par Rolf Schubert. Les quatres hommes se partagent le chant et délivrent un blues traditionnel sans surprise. Il n'y a que des reprises jouées platement.
The Big Four Blues Band consisted of Steve Freund, Bob Stroger, Robert Covington and Sam Burckhardt. "Going to Chicago" is their only studio album (while the group has toured all over including Europe). This album was recorded in Germany and produced by Rolf Schubert. The four men share singing duties and deliver a traditional blues without surprise. There are only covers played flatly.

Il chante et joue de la basse dans cet excellent programme bien supporté par de remarquables sidemen comme son ami James Wheeler, Billy Flynn, Ken Saydak, Ron Sorin et Marty Binder. On note que certains d'entre eux chantent sur quelques titres.
Thanks to the Lucerne festival in Switzerland, Bob Stroger reaches the position of leader for the first time. He sings and plays bass in this excellent program well supported by remarkable sidemen like his friend James Wheeler, Billy Flynn, Ken Saydak, Ron Sorin and Marty Binder. We note that some of them sing on a few tracks.

Arrivé à Chicago en 1955, il habite dans le West Side non loin du club Sylvio's. Dans les années 60, Bob - qui a appris la basse en autodidacte - forme d'abord un groupe avec Willie Kent. Souvent bassiste de studio, il accompagne Eddie King pendant une quinzaine d'années puis joua longtemps derrière Otis Rush. A partir des années 80, Bob travaille avec Sunnyland Slim, Mississippi Heat et participe aux tournées de l'American Folk Blues Festival. Avec ce premier album studio, Bob propose un programme de Chicago Blues traditionnel qui manque un peu de flamme. On apprécie la guitare subtile de Steve Freund.
Arriving in Chicago in 1955, he lived on the West Side not far from the Sylvio's club. In the 1960's, Bob - who taught himself bass - first formed a group with Willie Kent. Often a studio bassist, he accompanied Eddie King for around fifteen years then played for a long time behind Otis Rush. From the 80's, Bob worked with Sunnyland Slim, Mississippi Heat and toured with the American Folk Blues Festival. With this first studio album, Bob offers a traditional Chicago Blues program that lacks a little flame. We appreciate the subtle guitar of Steve Freund.

Maintenant nonagénaire, Bob reste un bon chanteur et un bon bassiste comme en témoigne cet album enregistré pour Delmark. Derrière lui, il y a les Headcutters, un groupe brésilien. Une tracklist pas forcément originale mais jouée avec feeling notamment sur "Just a bad boy", "I'm a busy man", "Talk to me mama" et "That's my name".
Now in his nineties, Bob remains a good singer and bassist as evidenced by this album recorded for Delmark. Behind him are the Headcutters, a brazilian group.
