Pendant l'enfance, elle apprend le piano mais se concentre rapidement sur le chant. Bonnie tourne avec les Famous Georgia Minstrels puis rejoint Chicago en 1958 ou elle rencontre Muddy Waters et J.B. Lenoir. Elle rencontre le célèbre producteur J. Mayo Williams qui lui fait enregistrer ses premiers titres pour sa marque Ebony en 1960. C'est le pianiste Sunnyland Slim qui fait réellement décoller sa carrière dès la fin des années 60. Pour celui-ci et son label Airway, Bonnie trouve enfin l'opportunité de graver une poignée de morceaux en 1974, les excellents "Sad and evil woman", "Tryin' to make a living", "Standing on the corner". Elle chante souvent aux côtés de Willie Kent dans les clubs de Chicago. En 1975, elle grave un simple pour le label Black Beauty de "Big" Bill Collins. D'après la Blues Discography, Bonnie aurait également participer à une séance restée inédite pendant l'été 1978 pour B.C. Productions.

During childhood, she learned the piano but quickly focused on singing. Bonnie toured with the Famous Georgia Minstrels then joined Chicago in 1958 where she met Muddy Waters and J.B. Lenoir. She met the famous producer J. Mayo Williams who makes her record her first titles for his Ebony imprint in 1960. It was the pianist Sunnyland Slim who really made her career take off at the end of the 1960's. For him and his Airway label, Bonnie finally found the opportunity to record a couple of songs in 1974, the excellent "Sad and evil woman", "Tryin' to make a living", "Standing on the corner". She often sings alongside Willie Kent in Chicago clubs. In 1975, she recorded a single for "Big" Bill Collins' Black Beauty label. According to the Blues Discography, Bonnie would also have participated in a session that remained unpublished during summer 1978 for B.C. Productions.

Après une grave dépression nerveuse due à des problèmes familiaux, elle reprend le cours de sa carrière grâce à l'appui de Willie Kent. C'est elle qui a l'idée initiale des concerts Blues with the Girls rassemblant les femmes du Blues. Au début de l'année 1982, Bonnie Lee figure d'ailleurs à l'affiche de la tournée européenne Blues with the Girls aux côtés de Zora Young et de "Big Time" Sarah. A l'occasion de la tournée, ce disque est enregistré sur le sol français. Elle y chante, avec sa voix puissante directement héritée de Koko Taylor, de bons titres comme "Fast life", "Next time I see you" ainsi qu'une nouvelle version de "Sad and evil woman".

After a serious nervous breakdown due to family problems, she resumed her career thanks to the support of Willie Kent. It was Bonnie who had the initial idea of Blues with the Girls concerts bringing together women of the Blues. At the beginning of 1982, Bonnie Lee indeed appeared on the Blues with the Girls european tour alongside Zora Young and "Big Time" Sarah. On the occasion of the tour, this album was recorded on french ground. She sings there, with her powerful voice directly inherited from Koko Taylor, good songs like "Fast life", "Next time I see you" as well as a new version of "Sad and evil woman".

Il y a dans ce premier album trois séances différentes enregistrées entre 1987 et 1991. Sur les deux premières, Bonnie Lee chante magnifiquement et est accompagnée de remarquables guitaristes comme Johnny B. Moore, John Primer et Magic Slim. Une tracklist de pur Chicago Blues avec de bons titres comme "I'm good", "Summer is gone", "Got the blues". Mais, la troisième séance s'avère beaucoup moins intense avec des musiciens moins percutants et une production un peu plate.

There are in this first album three different sessions recorded between 1987 and 1991. On the first two, Bonnie Lee sings magnificently and is accompanied by remarkable guitarists like Johnny B. Moore, John Primer and Magic Slim. A pure Chicago Blues tracklist with nice titles like "I'm good", "Summer is gone", "Got the blues". But, the third session turns out to be much less intense with less incisive musicians and a somewhat flat production.

Enregistré entre 1994 et 1995, produit par Steve Wagner pour Delmark, ce second album de Bonnie Lee propose de belles faces de Chicago Blues comme "Walking blues", "I love you baby", "Breakin' up somebody's home", "Got the blues 'bout my baby". Elle est épaulée par de bons sidemen parmi lesquels Johnny B. Moore, Ken Saydak, Billy Branch, Willie Kent. Mais si tout est bien joué, avec feeling même, la tracklist souffre d'être un peu trop classique (trop de reprises au détriment d'un matériel plus original).

Recorded between 1994 and 1995, produced by Steve Wagner for Delmark, this second album by Bonnie Lee offers nice Chicago Blues sides such as "Walking blues", "I love you baby", "Breakin' up somebody's home", "Got the blues 'bout my baby". But if everything is well played, even with feeling, the tracklist suffers from being a little too classic (too many covers instead of more original material).
