THE COMPLETE BROWNIE MC GHEEColumbia August 1940 - October 1941 |
Born in Knoxville, Brownie grew up in Kingsport. At 4 years old, he suffered from a polio which reached his right leg. He started in a small local group The Golden Voices Gospel Quartet then learned the guitar as a self-taught (but also banjo and ukulele). Having become a traveling musician, Brownie joined the Rabbit Foot Minstrels troop. At that time, he met "Blind Boy" Fuller - one of the pioneers of Piedmont Blues - who had a decisive influence on the young bluesman, in particular on his guitar playing. After the death of Fuller in 1941, producer John Baxter Long even nicknamed him "Blind Boy" Fuller n°2. Settled in New York since 1942 (he lived there until 1964), he records about forty titles for Okeh (a label belonging to Columbia). Accompanied by Oh Red's washboard (aka George Washington), guitarist Buddy Moss, excellent harmonica player Jordan Webb, Washboard Slim (aka Robert Young), Brownie delivers remarkable songs between ragtime and Piedmont Blues : "Not guilty blues", "Death of Blind Boy Fuller", "Dealing with the devil", "Picking my tomatoes", "Prison woman blues". A very consistent but also somewhat repetitive first work. |

THE FOLKWAYS YEARSSmithsonian - Folkways 1949 |
As with his pal Sonny Terry, Brownie's collaboration with Moses Asch's Folkways label was prolific and uneven. Historically, it was fundamental introducing the two bluesmen to a new audience. This selection concocted by Kip Lornell provides an excellent overview of this production. We find in this CD an unissued live title from 1949. |

GET ON BOARDFolkways 1951 |
Un ensemble inégal mais intéressant en particulier le blues "A man is nothing but a fool". Trio formed by Brownie, Sonny and Coyal Mac Mahan. Repertoire between Piedmont Blues and traditional or folk tunes. We especially hear the harmonica of Sonny Terry, Brownie's guitar staying in the background. The three men sing together or take turns. An uneven but interesting program especially with the blues "A man is nothing but a fool". |

HOMETOWN BLUESMainstream Fontana Sony 1952 |
Beaucoup de moments intenses comme "Man ain't nothin' but a fool", "The woman is killing me", "Meet you in the morning", "Feel so good", "Bad blood", "Lightnin's blues". We find in this disc one of the most remarkable periods of the duo Brownie Mac Ghee & Sonny Terry.
AT THE BUNKHOUSESmash Philips WHERE THE BLUES BEGINSFontana March 1965 |
New live recording of Sonny and Brownie on a canadian stage this time. But it is a routine performance, the two bluesmen playing without much flame. An album to recommend to confirmed fans and much lower than "At Sugar Hill" or "Backwater blues". |

A LONG WAY FROM HOMEBluesway March 1969 |
Le résultat semble parfois bancal et inabouti même si "Night & day" et "Life is a gamble" méritent l'écoute. Attempt by producer Ed Michel to mix the music of Sonny Terry & Brownie Mac Ghee with a more contemporary electrical arrangement. Behind the two bluesmen, we find Ray Johnson, Jimmy Bond and Panama Francis. The result sometimes seems flawed and unfinished even if "Night & day" and "Life is a gamble" are worth listening to. |

AMERICAN FOLK BLUES FESTIVAL '70Scout L+R November 1970 |
For the third time (after 1962 and 1967), Sonny Terry & Brownie Mac Ghee take part in the famous european tour. Even if it does not take place very well behind the scenes because of dissension between the musicians, there are nevertheless excellent moments like this beautiful version of "Walk on". |

THE BEST OF BROWNIE MC GHEEStoryville November 1971 |
Sessions for the danish label Storyville managed by Karl Emil Knudsen captured during one of his many trips to Europe. SONNY & BROWNIEA&M 1972 |
After the hazardous experiments for Bluesway, here is a new attempt to mix the music of Sonny Terry & Brownie Mac Ghee to more contemporary Country - Rock - Soul sounds and many guests among their white admirers (Arlo Guthrie, John Mayall, John Hammond). This ambitious project for an important label (A&M) was produced by Hal Winn and Maurice Rogers (aka Mighty Mo' Rodgers). Often underestimated by purists, we must recognize that this record has aged well and probably deserves to be reevaluated. The following year, Brownie and Sonny participated in the famous Montreux festival in Switzerland. According to Living Blues magazine and the Blues Discography, the A&M label had the intention to issue the concert on disc. But nothing has ever seen the light of day. |

GOING IT ALONEBlues Alliance April 1974 / January 1976 |
Curiously, this disc contains almost all the titles of Sonny Terry's mediocre album "Robbin' the grave" where however Brownie does not play at all. The other titles relate only to Brownie. They were recorded in january 1976 for the Blue Labor label which does not issue them. They were finally released in 1997 with this CD. This session with notably Sugar Blue, Louisiana Red and Tom Pomposello deserves an attentive ear. We note in particular the excellent "The blues had a baby" and "Chicken when I'm hungry" (in which Brownie plays piano). |

THE LAST GREAT BLUES HEROGoldstar Music Club OMEGA : THE FINAL RECORDINGSWestside May 1995 |
This session was boxed in only six hours but was not published until 2000. Brownie is in good shape and benefits from the dynamic support of the Elmer Lee Thomas Blue Revue (production of Kurt Foster). A generally consistent program but too focused on titles that he often played. Last record by Brownie Mac Ghee who was already suffering from stomach cancer which will carry him off a few months later. Following this album, he was to embark on a tour of Australia and New Zealand which was canceled due to his health condition. |
