Adolescent, il chante d'abord dans la chorale Gospel de l'église locale puis devient le batteur et chanteur des Jubilee Hummingbirds. Il devient un musicien important du Hill Country Blues en jouant derrière R.L. Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis ou le Como Fife and Drum. Marié à Linda (fille de R.L. Burnside), il s'installe au milieu des années 90 aux Pays Bas. Calvin délivre ici un bon album de blues brut et terrien avec des titres accrocheurs comme "Hard to get along", "Meet me in the bottom", "Thin ice", "When my first wife left me". Pour l'occasion, il est accompagné de musiciens néerlandais (Cass Ian, Carel De Neeve et Lazy Lew Beckers). Son fils Cedric Burnside poursuit également une fructueuse carrière de bluesman.

As a teenager, he first sang in the local church Gospel choir and then became the drummer and singer of the Jubilee Hummingbirds. He becomes an important musician of Hill Country Blues playing behind R.L. Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis or the Como Fife and Drum. Married to Linda (daughter of R.L. Burnside), he settled in the mid 90's in the Netherlands. Calvin delivers here a good album of raw and down home blues with catchy titles like "Hard to get along", "Meet me in the bottom", "Thin ice", "When my first wife left me". For the occasion, he is accompanied by dutch musicians (Cass Ian, Carel De Neeve and Lazy Lew Beckers). His son Cedric Burnside continues also a fruitful career as a bluesman.
