Trompettiste, chef d'orchestre, arrangeur, Calvin Owens - originaire du Fifth Ward à Houston - est surtout resté célèbre pour avoir joué dans l'orchestre de B.B. King entre 1953 et 1957. Plus tard, Calvin deviendra même son chef d'orchestre entre 1978 et 1984. A côté de cette prestigieuse référence, il fut aussi un musicien de studio très demandé. Au début des années 90, il entame une carrière en leader. Ce premier disque est enregistré en Belgique avec les apparitions de Johnny Copeland et de son ancien patron B.B. King. Entre Blues et big-band Rhythm & Blues, le programme semble un peu trop long mais possède de bons moments : "Don't you want a man like me", "Texas stomp", "Sitting here", "Woke up screaming".

Trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, Calvin Owens - originally from the Fifth Ward in Houston - is best known for playing in B.B. King's orchestra between 1953 and 1957. Later, Calvin will even become his bandleader between 1978 and 1984. Alongside this prestigious reference, he was also a studio musician in great demand. In the early 90's, he began a career as a leader. This first album is recorded in Belgium with the appearances of Johnny Copeland and his former boss B.B. King. Between Blues and Big Band Rhythm & Blues, the program seems a little too long but has good moments : "Don't you want a man like me", "Texas stomp", "Sitting here", "Woke up screaming".

Dans la continuité du premier album, Calvin Owens rassemble encore son big band pour un opus de Rhythm & Blues cuivré. Mais, ici l'inspiration fait cruellement défaut (comme l'interminable "Vincent Van Gogh" tellement soporifique) à part sur quelques pistes intéressantes comme "Eat where you sleep", "The blues I have for you" (deux titres chantés par Otis Clay) ou "On my feet again" (chanté par Ruby Wilson).

In the continuity of the first album, Calvin Owens brings together his big band again for a brassy Rhythm & Blues. But here inspiration is sorely lacking (as the interminable "Vincent Van Gogh" so soporific) apart from a few interesting tracks like "Eat where you sleep", "The blues I have for you" (two titles sung by Otis Clay) or "On my feet again" (sung by Ruby Wilson).

Pour ce troisième album, Calvin propose de longs morceaux de musique d'ambiance vaguement Jazz terriblement soporifiques ("Sunday afternoon", "Song for Helse") et une approche résolument plus contemporaine. Le programme est vraiment ennuyeux.

For this third album, Calvin offers long pieces of vaguely jazzy ambient music that are terribly soporific ("Sunday afternoon", "Song for Helse") and a resolutely more contemporary sound. The program is really boring.

Calvin Owens a invité sur cet album Trudy Lynn, Gloria Edwards et Leonard "Low Down" Brown. Mais le programme est rempli de ballades romantiques avec violons (et d'inutiles chansons de Noël) et des thèmes trop classiques de big band. On peut retenir tout de même "Stop lying in my face" (chanté par Trudy Lynn), "The house is burnin' down" (chanté par Gloria Edwards).

Calvin Owens has invited Trudy Lynn, Gloria Edwards and Leonard "Low Down" Brown on this album. But the program is filled with romantic ballads with violins (and useless christmas songs) and classic big band themes. We can still point out "Stop lying in my face" (sung by Trudy Lynn), "The house is burnin' down" (sung by Gloria Edwards).

Calvin continue son mélange de big band traditionnel avec différentes sonorités contemporaines sur son propre label Sawdust Alley. Il n'est malheureusement qu'un piètre chanteur et la musique semble bien meilleure quand il laisse le chant à Gloria Edwards par exemple ("I gotcha hootchie mama" est le meilleur morceau du CD).

Calvin continues his mix of traditional big band with different contemporary sounds on his own Sawdust Alley label. He is unfortunately only a poor singer and the music sounds much better when he leaves the vocals to Gloria Edwards for example ("I gotcha hootchie mama" is the best track on the CD).
