Originaire du Mississippi comme tant de bluesmen, Eddie Taylor est l'ami d'enfance de Jimmy Reed à qui il apprend la guitare. Il arrive à Chicago vers 1948-49. Guitariste subtil au jeu fluide et délié, il fut d'abord un accompagnateur compétent et apprécié auprès de son ami Jimmy Reed (jusqu'en 1966 environ), John Brim, Sunnyland Slim, Floyd Jones, Little Willie Foster et même John Lee Hooker. Cette intense activité de sideman l'empêcha pendant longtemps de démarrer sa propre carrière en leader. Ce CD édité par Jasmine rassemble une vingtaine de morceaux dans lesquels il accompagné les artistes pré-cités ainsi que les premiers titres qu'il a gravé en leader pour le label Vee-Jay.
Originally from Mississippi like so many bluesmen, Eddie Taylor is the childhood friend of Jimmy Reed to whom he teaches the guitar. He arrived in Chicago around 1948-49. Subtle guitarist with fluid and nimble playing, he was first a competent and appreciated accompanist with his friend Jimmy Reed (until around 1966), John Brim, Sunnyland Slim, Floyd Jones, Little Willie Foster and even John Lee Hooker. This intense activity as a sideman for a long time prevented him from starting his own career as a leader. This CD issued by Jasmine brings together around twenty tracks in which he accompanied the aforementioned artists as well than the first titles he recorded as a leader for the Vee-Jay label.

En quelques années, Eddie enregistre une poignée de chefs d'oeuvre du Chicago Blues où son chant délicat et sa guitare virtuose font des merveilles : "Bad boy", "E.T. blues", "Big town playboy", "You'll always have a home", "Stroll out west", "I'm gonna love you". Eddie enregistre jusqu'en 1957 pour le label de Chicago. Dans ces superbes sélections Charly, on trouve aussi les simples gravés en 1964 pour Vivid - remarquables eux aussi - avec derrière lui Jimmy Reed, Johnny Jones, Hubert Sumlin et Al Duncan. Vraiment indispensable à toute collection Blues.
Eddie has been active on the Chicago scene since the late 1940's, notably behind his childhood friend and mentor Jimmy Reed. He accompanies many artists of the city, particularly within the Vee-Jay label. With a reserved temperament, he put aside for a long time the idea of launching a career as a leader. He cut his first songs in january 1955 for Vee-Jay. In a few years, Eddie recorded a handful of Chicago Blues masterpieces where his delicate vocals and virtuoso guitar work wonders : "Bad boy", "E.T. blues", "Big town playboy", "You'll always have a home", "Stroll out west", "I'm gonna love you". Eddie recorded until 1957 for the Chicago label. In these superb Charly selections, we also find the singles recorded in 1964 for Vivid - remarkable too - with Jimmy Reed, Johnny Jones, Hubert Sumlin and Al Duncan behind him. Truly essential to any Blues collection.

Eddie semble avoir enregistrer une poignée de titres pour le label LaSalle de Jump Jackson en 1966. Mais ceux-ci sont restés inédits. La même année, grâce à Pete Welding, il grave ces morceaux avec derrière lui un groupe fantastique : Walter Horton (harmonica), Otis Spann (piano), Floyd Jones (basse) et Fred Below (batterie). Dans le LP original, il y a 6 titres mais la réédition CD ajoute deux titres supplémentaires (une prise alternative de "Bad boy" et "I feel so bad" qui était paru dans l'anthologie "Goin' to Chicago"). Eddie s'y montre au meilleur de sa forme délivrant une fois encore des pièces remarquables : "Train fare home", "Peach tree blues", "After hours", "Big town playboy".

Néanmoins, il a fallu attendre la parution CD pour que soient éditées les faces qu'il a enregistré à cette occasion. Cinq bons titres en particulier "Rockin' on 83 highway" et "Ride 'em on down".
Eddie Taylor participates in the Chicago Blues Festival tour organized by Jean Marie Monestier in France alongside Roosevelt Sykes and Homesick James. However, we had to wait for the CD release to hear the sides he recorded on this occasion. Five good titles in particular "Rockin' on 83 highway" and "Ride 'em on down".

Il a été enregistré sous la supervision du producteur Frank Scott en Californie avec Phillip Walker, George "Harmonica" Smith, Johnny Tucker parmi d'autres. Eddie chante parfaitement avec sa voix élégante et sa guitare virtuose est constamment brillante : "I feel so bad", "Stop breaking down", "13 highway", "Going upside your head", "Twelve year old boy", "Blues in the rain", l'acoustique "Stroll out west". La réédition CD japonaise de P-Vine ajoute trois titres supplémentaires gravés lors des mêmes séances. Un disque indispensable à toute collection Blues.
Apart from a few sides for Vee-Jay and then a few others long after for Testament, Eddie Taylor recorded little as a leader. This sumptuous album is in fact his first. It was recorded under the supervision of producer Frank Scott in California with Phillip Walker, George "Harmonica" Smith, Johnny Tucker among others. Eddie sings perfectly with his elegant voice and his virtuoso guitar is constantly brilliant : "I feel so bad", "Stop breaking down", "13 highway", "Going upside your head", "Twelve year old boy", "Blues in the rain", the acoustic "Stroll out west". The japanese CD reissue of P-Vine adds three additional titles recorded during the same sessions. An essential album for any Blues collection.

La tournée était organisée et supervisée par Jim Simpson qui logiquement produit aussi cet album. Accompagné par d'excellents musiciens anglais, Eddie Taylor se montre une fois encore en grande forme dans ce programme intense et consistant : "I'm a country boy", "Seems like a million years", "Gamblin' man", l'instrumental "Ready for Eddie", "Too late to cry", "Playboy boogie", "I used to have some friends".
This album was recorded during the 1974 American Blues Legends tour in which Eddie participated. The tour was organized and supervised by Jim Simpson who logically produced also this album. Initialement, Eddie Taylor ne devait pas participer à cette tournée au Japon. Mais, la tête d'affiche Fenton Robinson ayant eu des problèmes de visa, Eddie fut embauché pour le remplacer. Derrière lui, on trouve des sidemen expérimentés (Louis & Dave Myers et Odie Payne Jr). Il s'agit d'un bon concert auquel il manque probablement un peu de flamme. Il y eut plusieurs éditions différentes en particulier une édition Deluxe qui reprend l'intégralité du concert d'Eddie mais aussi les parties chantées par les trois autres bluesmen.
Initially, Eddie Taylor was not to participate in this tour in Japan. But, headliner Fenton Robinson having had visa problems, Eddie was hired as his replacement. Behind him, we find experienced sidemen (Louis & Dave Myers and Odie Payne Jr). This is a good concert which probably lacks a bit of flame. There were several different editions in in particular a Deluxe edition which includes the entire Eddie concert but also the parts sung by the three other bluesmen.

Produit par Horst Lippmann pour son label L+R, cet album est le premier opus studio d'Eddie Taylor depuis 1974. Il semble être en forme aussi bien vocalement que sur sa guitare même s'il a un peu perdu sa spontanéité. Eddie délivre ici néanmoins un bon set de Chicago Blues, solide et bien joué.
Produced by Horst Lippmann for his L+R label, this album is Eddie Taylor's first studio opus since 1974. He seems to be in good shape both vocally and on his guitar even though he has a little lost his spontaneity. Eddie nevertheless delivers here a good set of Chicago Blues, solid and well played.

Eddie is in good shape and is supported by a compact backing band consisting of Johnny B. Moore, Willie Kent and Larry & Tim Taylor. On some tracks, Vera Taylor (Eddie's wife) sings.
