Cousin de Carey Bell, élevé par sa grand-mère Cherokee, il grandit à Birmingham (Arkansas). Gaucher, il apprend avec une guitare de droitier portée à l'envers. Arrivé à Chicago en septembre 1950, Eddy joue d'abord surtout du Gospel tout en exerçant de nombreux métiers. Il joue sur le marché de Maxwell Street au début des années 50 sous le nom de Guitar Eddy. Grâce à son oncle Houston Harrington - manager du label Atomic H - il peut graver ses premiers titres - en 1958-59 et sous le pseudonyme de Clear Waters (un surnom que lui a donné "Jump" Jackson en hommage à Muddy Waters) - dans un style très ouvert intégrant aussi bien des éléments Blues, que Rock & Roll ou Rhythm & Blues : "Hillbilly blues", "Neckbones everyday" et le fameux "A minor cha cha". Avec ce dernier morceau, il s'inscrit même dans la mouvance West Side Sound naissante. En 1960, Eddy enregistre une poignée de titres pour le label LaSalle (le label du batteur "Jump" Jackson). A la même époque, il devient le guitariste d'Eddie Bell & The Hill Boppers, un groupe de Rock & Roll blanc de Chicago. Avec eux, il enregistre substantiellement jusqu'au milieu des années 60 (certains de ces morceaux sont disponibles dans le recueil proposé par Gérard Herzhaft sur son blog Blue Eye). Devenu Eddy Clearwater, il grave quelques morceaux chez Federal en 1961 sous la supervision du producteur Sonny Thompson ("A real good time", "Hey Bernardine") puis chez USA ("The duck walk") avant de passer chez Versa (pour le funky "Doin' the model"). La sélection du blog Blue Eye comprend également un excellent simple gravé en novembre 1974 pour son propre label Cleartone : "True love" d'inspiration Soul-Funk et le Blues "Lonely nights".
Cousin of Carey Bell, raised by his Cherokee grandmother, he grew up in Birmingham, Arkansas. Left-handed, he learns with a right-handed guitar held upside down. Arrived in Chicago in september 1950, Eddy first plays Gospel while working many jobs. He played on the Maxwell Street market in the early 50's as Guitar Eddy. Thanks to his uncle Houston Harrington - manager of the Atomic H label - he can record his first titles - in 1958-59 and under the pseudonym of Clear Waters (a nickname that gave him "Jump" Jackson in tribute to Muddy Waters) - in a very open style incorporating both Blues, Rock & Roll or Rhythm & Blues elements : "Hillbilly blues", "Neckbones everyday" and the famous "A minor cha cha". With this last track, he is even part of the nascent West Side Sound movement. In 1960, Eddy cut a handful of titles for the LaSalle (the label of drummer "Jump" Jackson). At the same time, he became the guitarist of Eddie Bell & The Hill Boppers, a white Chicago Rock & Roll band. With them, he records substantially until the mid-60's (some of these pieces are available in the collection proposed by Gerard Herzhaft on his Blue Eye blog). Became Eddy Clearwater, he made a few songs at Federal in 1961 under the supervision of producer Sonny Thompson ("A real good time", "Hey Bernardine") then at USA ("The duck walk") before going to Versa (for the funky "Doin' the model"). The Blue Eye blog selection also includes an excellent simple engraved in november 1974 for his own Cleartone label : the Soul-Funk inspired "True love" and pure blues "Lonely nights".

Une set-list très blues jouée par un groupe dense et inspiré. Quelques longueurs par moments mais globalement très prenant ("Black night, "My babe", "Hoochie coochie man"). Il y a 3 titres supplémentaires sur la version CD de Storyville.

Ce CD paru en 1999 réédite l'album "Two times nine" et ajoute des titres live prévus pour le label Baron mais restés inédits jusqu'alors. Ces titres live, captés au Kingston Mines, possèdent une qualité sonore assez moyenne qui peut gâcher le plaisir de l'auditeur.
This CD released in 1999 reissues the "Two times nine" album and adds live tracks planned for the Baron label but remained unissued until then. These live tracks, recorded at Kingston Mines, have a fairly average sound quality that can spoil the listener's pleasure.

Ces bandes semblent avoir été gravées pour son propre label Cleartone mais sont restées inédites. Elles furent ensuite vendues à Ron Bartolucci pour son label Baron qui échoua à les publier. Finalement, c'est la marque anglaise Charly qui publie le LP "Two times nine" en 1981. Plusieurs autres éditions ont suivi avec des set-lists différentes. On peut ressortir les superbes "Came up the hard way", "2x9", "Chicago daily blues", "The world is in bad situation" ainsi que le funky "A little bit of blues, a little bit of rock & roll". Derrière Eddy, on trouve d'excellents musiciens comme Abb Locke, Jimmy Johnson, Allen Batts, Casey Jones parmi d'autres.
These tapes seem to have been recorded for his own Cleartone label but have remained unissued. They were then sold to Ron Bartolucci for his Baron label, which failed to publish them. Finally, the english imprint Charly issued the "Two times nine" LP in 1981. Several other editions followed with different set-lists. We can highlight the beautiful "Came up the hard way", "2x9", "Chicago daily blues", "The world is in bad situation" and the funky "A little bit of blues, a little bit of rock & roll ". Behind Eddy, there are great musicians like Abb Locke, Jimmy Johnson, Allen Batts, Casey Jones among others.

Dans ce pur disque de Chicago Blues, il est parfaitement supporté par des sidemen exceptionnels (Lurrie Bell, Abb Locke, Lafayette Leake, Casey Jones, Chuck Smith et surtout un superbe Carey Bell).
Recorded in two nights at Odyssey Sound Studios in Chicago, this album was supervised by Jim & Amy O'Neal for their Rooster label. Malgré des accompagnateurs de premier choix (Allen Batts, Chuck Smith, Bob Stroger, Casey Jones), le disque peine à convaincre : une qualité sonore assez moyenne, des morceaux un peu longs, des leaders peu inspirés. Un disque assez mineur et peu intéressant.
Live tapes captured in Cambridge (Massachusetts) in which the cousins Carey Bell and Eddy Clearwater share the bill. Despite first-choice musicians (Allen Batts, Chuck Smith, Bob Stroger, Casey Jones), the disc is hardly convincing : a rather average sound quality, a bit too long songs, uninspired leaders. A relatively minor and not very interesting album.

Autour d'Eddy - flamboyant au chant et à la guitare - on trouve d'admirables musiciens : Sugar Blue, Abb Locke, Leo Davis ainsi que l'excellent batteur Tim Austin.
Second disc - sometimes underestimated - for the Rooster label co-produced by Jim O'Neal and Eddy himself. We can highlight the superb and exciting opening title "All about the blues", the dancing "Do this town tonight", the remarkable slow blues "Black night falling down easy" (with the decisive participation of Otis Rush), "IRS man". Entre Blues et Rock & Roll, l'atmosphère est chaude et enjouée et l'album fort plaisant. Il y a trois titres supplémentaires dans la version CD.
Live album assembled from several concerts given in Indiana clubs in late 1988 / early 1989. In an overheated ambience, Eddy plays with his regular band. Between Blues and Rock & Roll, the atmosphere is warm and cheerful and the album is very pleasant. There are three additional titles in the CD version.

Avec son groupe très homogène et inspiré (Will Crosby, Herman Applewhite, Tim Austin), Eddy délivre un album solide et consistant, émaillé de vraies réussites comme "Blues hang out", "I came up the hard way", "Stormy monday blues", "Blues for breakfast", "Chicago Daley blues", "You upset my baby". On note aussi l'apparition de la chanteuse "Big Time" Sarah sur quelques morceaux. L'album est publié sur le label français Black & Blue et réédité sous la marque américaine Evidence.

Une production très travaillée - oeuvre de Jerry Del Giudice et Michael Freeman - qui donne à la musique d'Eddy une coloration bien particulière mais pas totalement convaincante. Intéressant mais moins percutant que ses précédents albums pour Rooster ou Black & Blue. A noter, une jolie reprise de "All your love".

Ce disque fut d'abord publié par Cleartone - le label d'Eddy - avant d'être rapidement repris par Bullseye (un label appartenant à Rounder). Plus varié que les opus précédents et donc moins blues, il y a ici une bonne dose de Soul - Rhythm & Blues. Mais, peu inspiré et peu convaincant, il ne séduit jamais l'auditeur. On peut éventuellement retenir "Check up on my baby" où Eddy redevient le bluesman que l'on aime.
This album was first released by Cleartone - Eddy's own label - before being quickly reissued by Bullseye (a label owned by Rounder). More varied than previous opuses and therefore less blues, there is here a good dose of Soul - Rhythm & Blues. But, uninspired and unconvincing, he never seduces the listener. We can possibly remember "Check up on my baby" where Eddy becomes the bluesman we love.

Après un triple pontage coronarien en janvier 1997, Eddy propose un deuxième album pour Bullseye dans la continuation de "Mean case of the blues". Produit par Duke Robillard et accompagné par son groupe, le programme comporte quelques rares bons moments : "Cool blues walk", "Nashville road" et ses accents Country, "The love I have for you" (et le solo d'harmonica de Jerry Portnoy). Le reste semble malheureusement bien plat.
After a triple coronary bypass in january 1997, Eddy offers a second album for Bullseye in continuation of "Mean case of the blues". Produced by Duke Robillard and accompanied by his band, the program has some rare good moments : "Cool blues walk", "Nashville road" and its Country accents, "The love I have for you" (and Jerry Portnoy's harmonica solo). The remaining tracks seem unfortunately flat.

Agé de presque 80 ans, Eddy démontre qu'il demeure toujours un showman charismatique dans cet album live. Bien supporté par Ronnie Baker Brooks à la guitare, il donne quelques intéressantes versions de "Hypnotized", "Too old to get married", "Came up the hard way / Root to the fruit". Il meurt dans sa maison de Skokie (banlieue nord de Chicago) d'un arrêt cardiaque. Il y eut deux femmes dans sa vie : sa première femme Earlean (qui fut également son manager) et sa seconde femme Renee Greenman.
Almost 80 years old, Eddy shows that he is still a charismatic showman in this live album. Well supported by Ronnie Baker Brooks on guitar, he gives some interesting versions of "Hypnotized", "Too old to get married", "Came up the hard way / Root to the fruit". He died in his home in Skokie, a northern suburb of Chicago, from cardiac arrest. There were two women in his life : his first wife Earlean (who was also his manager) and his second wife Renee Greenman.
