Elizabeth commence par jouer du banjo dès l'âge de 8 ans mais se tourne rapidement vers la guitare. Gauchère, elle joue avec une guitare renversée. Dès ses 12 ans, Elizabeth travaille comme domestique puis se marie avec Frank Cotten. Au début des années 40, elle habite à Washington et travaille pour la famille des frères Pete & Mike Seeger. Grâce à Mike, Elizabeth enregistre ses premières faces à son domicile pour Folkways en 1957 où elle montre sa dextérité à la guitare (et surtout sa technique du fingerpicking). Son "Freight train" sera un succès important fréquemment repris. Son répertoire va des airs traditionnels et folkloriques, au Ragtime, au Blues. Hormis "Freight train" qu'elle jouera toute sa vie, on peut retenir "Going down that road feeling bad", "Honey baby your papa cares for you", "Oh babe it ain't no lie".
Elizabeth begins playing banjo at age 8 but quickly turns to guitar. Left-handed, she plays with an upside-down guitar. At age 12, Elizabeth works as a housekeeper then marries Frank Cotten. In the early 1940's, she lives in Washington and works for brothers Pete & Mike Seeger's family. Thanks to Mike, Elizabeth records her first sides at home for Folkways in 1957 where she shows her dexterity on guitar (and especially her fingerpicking technique). Her "Freight train" was an important success frequently covered. Her repertoire ranges from traditional and folk tunes to Ragtime and Blues. Aside from "Freight train" that she played all her life, we can remember "Going down that road feeling bad", "Honey baby your daddy cares for you", "Oh babe it ain't no lie".

Son vaste répertoire est largement exploré ici : airs folkloriques et traditionnels, pièces religieuses, intrumentaux de danse, un peu de blues,... La superbe chanson titre "Shake sugaree" est chantée par sa fille Brenda Evans. On apprécie son fingerpicking fluide à la guitare et au banjo. Ces titres ont été gravé lors de plusieurs séances (dont une dans une école primaire) supervisées par Mike Seeger en 1965-66.
His vast repertoire is widely explored here : folk and traditional tunes, religious pieces, dance intrumentals, a few blues, ... The superb title song "Shake sugaree" is sung by her daughter Brenda Evans. We appreciate her fluid fingerpicking on guitar and banjo. These titles were recorded during several sessions (including one in a primary school) supervised by Mike Seeger in 1965-66.

Troisième recueil pour Folkways réalisé sous la supervision de Mike Seeger. Il rassemble des faces issues de nombreuses séances informelles disséminées tout au long des années 70. Certains morceaux sont chantés par sa petite fille Johnine Rankin. Elizabeth délivre son habituel cocktail de musiques traditionnelles réhaussé de son remarquable jeu de guitare. Habitant désormais à Syracuse (New York), elle travaille comme domestique jusqu'en 1970 et prend sa retraite.
Third collection for Folkways made under the supervision of Mike Seeger. It brings together sides from numerous informal sessions scattered throughout the 70's. Some tracks are sung by her little daughter Johnine Rankin. Elizabeth delivers her usual cocktail of traditional music enhanced by her remarkable guitar playing. Now living in Syracuse, New York, she worked as a housekeeper until 1970 and retired.
