Cinquième de sept enfants, il grandit en Géorgie et chante avec ses frères et soeurs à l'église. Quand son père décède en 1949, J.B. et sa famille s'installe à Chicago dans le South Side. Mais, peu après, il est enrôlé dans l'armée et participe à la guerre de Corée. De retour à la vie civile, il joue de la batterie derrière Johnny Ferguson avant de se faire finalement guitariste. Il joue régulièrement sur le marché ouvert de Maxwell Street en compagnie d'Eddie "Porkchop" Hines et "Earring" George Mayweather. J.B. et son groupe sont alors enregistrés par la firme Chance en 1954 et délivrent de superbes morceaux de pur Chicago Blues influencés par Elmore James : "Pet cream man", "Lovin' you", "Things are so slow". Pourtant, il abandonne la musique peu après et devient concierge pendant une dizaine d'années.
The fifth of seven children, he grew up in Georgia and sang with his siblings in church. When his father died in 1949, J.B. and his family moved to Chicago's South Side. But soon after, he was drafted into the army and served in the Korean War. Upon returning to civilian life, he played drums backing Johnny Ferguson before eventually becoming a guitarist. He played regularly at the Maxwell Street open market with Eddie "Porkchop" Hines and "Earring" George Mayweather. J.B. and his band were then recorded by Chance label in 1954 and delivered superb tracks of pure Chicago blues influenced by Elmore James : "Pet cream man", "Lovin' you", "Things are so slow". However, he gave up music soon after and worked as a janitor for about ten years.

Entouré de son groupe régulier les Hawks - Herman Hassell (basse) et Frank Kirkland (batterie) - il délivre de remarquables morceaux comme "Please help", "Too much alcohol", "That's the truth" et surtout le sublime "Married woman blues".
It was Charlie Musselwhite who introduced J.B. Hutto to producer Sam Charters. Charters was preparing an anthology showcasing the Chicago blues scene and offered J.B. the opportunity to record a handful of tracks. Accompanied by his regular band The Hawks - Herman Hassell (bass) and Frank Kirkland (drums) - he delivered remarkable songs such as "Please help", "Too much alcohol", "That's the truth" and especially the sublime "Married woman blues".

Hutto - en pleine forme - y est accompagné d'un groupe de rêve : Walter Horton (harmonica), Johnny Young (guitare), Lee Jackson (basse) et Fred Below (batterie). Dans un style proche d'Elmore James, il délivre de formidables titres tels que "Dust my broom", "Mistake in life", "Lulubelle's here", "My kind of woman", "Blues stay away from me", "Sloppy drunk". Un Chicago Blues puissant, urgent et bourré de feeling. La réédition CD reprend les 2 morceaux présents dans l'anthologie "Goin' to Chicago" issus de la même séance.
This magnificent session was produced and recorded by Pete Welding and Norman Dayron for the Testament label. J.B. Hutto — in top form — is accompanied by a dream band : Walter Horton (harmonica), Johnny Young (guitar), Lee Jackson (bass) and Fred Below (drums). Ce CD édité en 2004 par Delmark regroupe des bandes live capturées en décembre 1966 au Mother Blues, un club de Chicago, avec son groupe régulier les Hawks (Herman Hassell, Frank Kirkland) et des titres studios provenant des séances de décembre 1972 pour l'album "Slidewinder". La partie live comporte de bons moments, dynamiques et puissants. En revanche, les titres studios, bien qu'honorables, s'avèrent plus inégaux.
This CD, released in 2004 by Delmark, compiles live recordings captured in december 1966 at the Mother Blues, a Chicago club, with his regular band The Hawks (Herman Hassell, Frank Kirkland) and studio tracks from december 1972 sessions for the "Slidewinder" album. The live portion features some good and dynamic moments. However, the studio tracks, though decent, are more uneven.

This LP compiles various live tracks from a tour in Sweden in february 1976. For this occasion, J.B. is accompanied by attentive Swedish musicians. A well-recorded and rather interesting tracklist with enjoyable versions of his own songs ("Things are so slow", "Blues for Fonessa", "My kind of woman") as well as some inspired covers of blues standards.

Here are some live recordings from 1976-1977 captured in Vienna, Austria. As is often the case on these european tours, J.B. is, here, accompanied by local musicians. The sound quality is average but acceptable, the music interesting but not particularly original. At the end of the tracklist, there are two more energetic tracks featuring Brewer Phillips and Ted Harvey.

La réédition CD de Wolf ajoute quatre morceaux live supplémentaires.
This is a half-studio, half-live Baron LP album. It had been several years since J.B. Hutto had recorded in a studio. A shame, because the four studio tracks presented here deserve a careful listen ("You don't love me", "Love retirement"). The rest of the album offers uninteresting live tracks. The Wolf CD reissue adds four more live tracks.

On note que la réédition CD ajoute trois morceaux de John Littlejohn.
We don't really know where these tracks come from, when they were recorded, or the names of the musicians accompanying J.B., but they are a pleasure to listen to. Cette séance américaine fut éditée par le label français Black & Blue et rééditée plusieurs fois avec ajout de titres inédits et de prises alternatives. J.B. se montre en grande forme. Avec sa voix forte et sa slide guitare tranchante, il délivre un excellent disque de pur Chicago Blues, bien épaulé par son groupe régulier (Steve Coveney, Kenny Krumbholz, Leroy Pina) : "I feel so good", "Lulubelle's here", "My heart is achin' to love you", "Angel face", "Tell me mama", "That's the truth", "Combination boogie".
It wasn't until 1982 that J.B. Hutto finally released a new studio album. This american session was released by the french label Black & Blue and reissued several times with the addition of unreleased tracks and alternate takes. J.B. is in top form. Le premier concert n'est pas si mal mais le programme s'avère beaucoup trop long (plusieurs morceaux approchant ou dépassant les 8 minutes). Quant aux trois morceaux capturés à Montreux, ils n'ont guère d'intérêt.
This double CD, released in 2014 by Rockbeat, features two concerts recorded in 1982 : a concert at the Mutualité in Paris and some previously unreleased tracks from his performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The first concert isn't bad but the setlist is far too long (several tracks approaching or exceeding 8 minutes). As for the three tracks recorded in Montreux, they are of little interest.

Le microsillon original a été publié sur le label Varrick et réédité par Bullseye avec deux titres inédits (deux labels appartenants à Rounder).
