Fils de Walter et Rosie, Joe joue du violon de son père dès ses 6 ans. Le jeune homme joue bientôt avec celui-ci lors de fêtes locales. Il s'associe avec son cousin Odell (fils de John Arch Thompson) qui joue de la guitare et du banjo. Alors que les deux hommes sont actifs depuis la fin des années 30, ils trouvent un peu de reconnaissance dans les années 70 en participant à différents festivals locaux. Sur cette anthologie, on peut écouter les premiers titres enregistrés du duo : Joe au violon, Odell au banjo dans des reprises de traditionnels du Piedmont comme "Georgia buck", "Old corn liquor", "John Henry". Sur deux titres, Joe est accompagné du banjoïste Tommy Thompson.
Son of Walter and Rosie, Joe plays his father's fiddle since he is 6 years old. The young man soon plays with him at local festivals. He associates with his cousin Odell (son of John Arch Thompson) who plays guitar and banjo. While the two men have been active since the late 1930's, they find some recognition in the 1970's by participating in various local festivals. On this anthology, we can listen to the duo's first recorded titles : Joe on fiddle, Odell on banjo in Piedmont traditional songs covers like "Georgia buck", "Old corn liquor", "John Henry". On two tracks, Joe is accompanied by the banjoist Tommy Thompson.
