D'après les notes de pochette de Scott Van Dusen, ce CD - édité tardivement en 1999 - relate une démo enregistré en studio par John Campbell. On remarque déjà son impressionnante autorité sur la guitare et sur le bottleneck. Aussi à l'aise dans le Delta-Blues que dans le Piedmont-Blues, il reprend des compositions de Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, K.C. Douglas, Elmore James, Blind Blake. Une très belle séance qu'il faut découvrir.
According to the liner notes of Scott Van Dusen, this CD - issued in late 1999 - recounts a demo recorded in studio by John Campbell. We already noticed his impressive authority on the guitar and on the bottleneck. Equally at home in the Delta Blues in the Piedmont Blues, he covers some compositions of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, K.C. Douglas, Elmore James, Blind Blake. A beautiful session to be discovered.

En fait, il s'agit probablement d'un enregistrement pirate datant du début des années 80. La qualité sonore est excellente. On retrouve les mêmes qualités que dans "Tyler Texas sessions" : une guitare inspirée et virtuose dans des reprises de standards du Blues (en particulier du Delta-Blues).
In fact, it is probably a bootleg recording from the early 80's. The sound quality is excellent. We find the same qualities that in "Tyler Texas sessions" : an inspired and virtuoso guitar covering Blues standards (especially Delta-Blues).

En 1985, John s'installe à New York. Remarqué dans un club par Ronnie Earl, les deux hommes sympathisent et se produisent sur scène ensemble. Puis, Earl - impressionné par le talent de John Campbell - lui propose de produire son premier album studio. Gravé pour le label allemand Crosscut en deux jours, ce disque lui procurera une vraie reconnaissance publique. Il apparaitra, d'ailleurs, au Mississippi Delta Blues Festival puis au New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Il y a trois morceaux - comme les excellents "Judgment day" et "Texas country boy" - dans lesquels John est accompagné de Ronnie Earl (guitare), Jerry Portnoy (harmonica), Darrell Nulisch (voix) et Per Hanson (batterie). Mais, il est surtout en configuration acoustique sur des reprises ou des compositions personnelles ("Bad night blues", "Deep river rag").
In 1985, John moved to New York. Spotted by Ronnie Earl in a club, the two men sympathize and perform on stage together. Then, Earl - impressed by the talent of John Campbell - asked him to produce his first studio album. Recorded for the german label Crosscut in two days, this disc will give him a real public recognition. He appear, moreover, at the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival and at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. There are three tunes - like the excellent "Judgment day" and "Texas country boy" - in which John was accompanied by Ronnie Earl (guitar), Jerry Portnoy (harmonica), Darrell Nulisch (voice) and Per Hanson (drums). But, he is often in acoustic configuration on covers or personal compositions ("Bad night blues", "Deep river rag").

Découvert par l'agent de Dr John, John signe un contrat avec Elektra en 1990. Quelques mois plus tard, il grave l'album "One believer" avec les producteurs Dennis Walker (producteur de Robert Cray) et Peter Lubin. Un disque introspectif, sombre et lourd (l'émouvant "Angel of mercy") où John creuse jusqu'au plus profond de son âme torturée. Son "Devil in my closet" est un chef d'oeuvre mais "Wild streak", "Tiny coffin" et "World of trouble" méritent vraiment l'écoute. Son meilleur album.
Discovered by Dr. John agent, John signed a contract with Elektra in 1990. A few months later, he cut "One believer" album with producer Dennis Walker (Robert Cray's producer) and Peter Lubin. An introspective album, dark and heavy (the moving "Angel of mercy"), in which John dig deep in his tortured soul. His "Devil in my closet" is a masterpiece but "Wild streak", "Tiny coffin" and "World of trouble" are really worth listening. His best album.

Après s'être marié avec Dolly, John enregistre un second album pour Elektra. Dans celui-ci, sa voix se fait beaucoup plus rocailleuse. Le son est aussi plus lourd et menaçant : "Ain't afraid of midnight", "When the levee breaks", "Down in the hole", "Firin' line". Grâce au succès de ses deux albums pour Elektra, John part en tournée en Europe avec B.B. King et Buddy Guy. Malheureusement, sa santé fragile aura raison de lui : il perd la vie pendant son sommeil une nuit de juin 1993.
After marrying Dolly, John record a second album for Elektra. In this disc, his voice is much more rocky. The sound is also heavier and threatening : "Ain't afraid of midnight", "When the levee breaks", "Down in the hole", "Firin' line". With the success of his two Elektra albums, John toured Europe with B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Unfortunately, his poor health will overcome him, he dies in his sleep one night in june 1993.
