Né dans le Mississippi, il grandit près de Jackson. John est d'abord influencé par Henry Martin, un ami de son père. Autodidacte, il apprend la guitare et écoute attentivement Lightnin' Hopkins et Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. Il quitte la ferme familiale en 1946 et s'installe d'abord à Jackson. Il y anime une émission régulière sur WOJK. John habite ensuite à Rochester (New York) en 1949 et enfin Gary (Indiana) dès 1951 où il travaille dans une station service. Arrivé à Chicago au milieu des années 50, John s'insère dans la communauté Blues grâce à Blue Smitty. Il fait de sympathiques débuts discographiques en aout 1966 pour le label Margaret ("Kitty O", "Johnny's jive", "What in the world") puis peu après chez TDS où il est accompagné notamment d'Abb Locke et de Lafayette Leake (de bons titres comme "29 ways" et "I need lovin'").

He hosts a regular show on WOJK. John then lives in Rochester (New York) in 1949 and finally in Gary (Indiana) in 1951 where he works in a gas station. Arriving in Chicago in the mid-1950's, John joins the Blues community with the help of Blue Smitty. He made some nice record debuts in august 1966 for Margaret label ("Kitty O", "Johnny's jive", "What in the world") and soon after for TDS where he is accompanied by Abb Locke and Lafayette Leake (some good titles like "29 ways" and "I need lovin'").

Avec sa slide guitare, subtile et tranchante, et son chant superbe également, John livre ici un pur album de Chicago Blues. La séance est co-produite par Chris Strachwitz et Willie Dixon. Derrière John, on peut entendre un groupe très efficace rehaussé notamment de deux saxophones (Robert Pulliam, Willie Young). Plusieurs moments mémorables comme "What in the world you goin' to do", "Catfish blues", "Slidin' home", "Dream", "Been around the world", "How much more long". La version CD possède deux titres supplémentaires vraiment excellents ("I'm tired", "Nowhere to lay my head").
With his subtle and sharp slide guitar, and his superb vocals as well, John delivers here a pure Chicago Blues album. This session is co-produced by Chris Strachwitz and Willie Dixon. Behind John, we can hear a very effective backing band enhanced with two saxophones (Robert Pulliam, Willie Young). Several memorable moments like "What in the world you goin' to do", "Catfish blues", "Slidin' home", "Dream", "Been around the world", "How much more long". Curieusement, cette séance réalisée pour le label Chess en février 1969 est restée méconnue. Elle recèle pourtant quatre très bons morceaux où John Littlejohn montre ses talents à la slide guitare : "When I think about my baby", "Keep on running", "She's too much", "I had a dream". Mais, ces titres ne verront le jour qu'en 1979 avec la parution des anthologies "Sultans of the slide guitar" et "Slide guitar classics". Derrière John, on trouve Donald Hankins (saxophone), "Mighty" Joe Young (guitare), Sylvester Boines (basse) et Hezekiah Roby (batterie).
Curiously, this session realized for Chess label in february 1969 remained largely unknown. It contains four very good songs where John Littlejohn shows his talents on slide guitar : "When I think about my baby", "Keep on running", "She's too much", "I had a dream". Sous la supervision du producteur Al Smith, John grave ce disque pour le label Bluesway. Le bluesman est notamment impérial à la guitare. Son jeu fluide et incisif est remarquable. L'album fut vraisemblablement gravé lors de deux séances distinctes auxquelles participèrent de superbes musiciens comme Big Walter Horton, Eddie Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Dave Myers, Fred Below. Album méconnu - jamais réédité en CD - il s'impose pourtant comme un des meilleurs opus de John Littlejohn à l'instar de "Chicago blues stars". Selon Al Smith, John aurait participé à une autre séance pour Bluesway l'année suivante en compagnie de Carey Bell. Mais si celle-ci existe réellement, elle est toujours restée inédite.
Under the supervision of producer Al Smith, John records this album for Bluesway label. The bluesman is especially imperial on guitar. His fluid and incisive playing is remarkable. The album was probably recorded in two separate sessions featuring great musicians like Big Walter Horton, Eddie Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Dave Myers and Fred Below. Unknown album - never reissued on CD - it is nevertheless one of the best opus of John Littlejohn alongside "Chicago blues stars". According to Al Smith, John would have attended another session for Bluesway the following year with Carey Bell. But if it really exists, it has always remained unissued.

Malgré un répertoire assez classique avec reprise de nombreux standards, la musique est jouée avec conviction et compétence. Derrière John, on trouve les frères Larry & Aron Burton et Candy Utah. On trouve six titres supplémentaires dans l'édition CD Storyville.
Captured onstage of the Chicago club Ma Bea's by french Marcelle Morgantini, John delivers here a nice live album typical of an evening in a Blues club. Despite a fairly classical repertoire with many standards covers, the music is played with conviction and competence. Behind John, we find the brothers Larry & Aron Burton and Candy Utah. There are six additional titles in the Storyville CD edition.

Séance française gravée à Paris avec un bel orchestre composé de Lafayette Leake, Alabama Pettis Jr, Nick Holt et Fred Below, lors d'une tournée du Chicago Blues Festival. On trouve ici une majorité de tempos lents ou moyens ("Please love me", "Sweet black angel", "Driftin' blues"). A noter aussi "Burro beat" et son rythme lancinant. Du bon Chicago Blues qui manque peut être d'un peu de flamme. Enfin, il faut aussi signaler que cet album a été enregistré le lendemain de "Feel so blue" de Lafayette Leake avec la même équipe (Littlejohn inclus).
French session recorded in Paris with a beautiful backing band composed of Lafayette Leake, Alabama Pettis Jr, Nick Holt and Fred Below, during Chicago Blues Festival french tour. Here we find a majority of slow or medium tempos ("Please love me", "Sweet black angel", "Driftin' blues"). Also note "Burro beat" and its throbbing rhythm. Some good Chicago Blues that is maybe missing a bit of a flame. Finally, it should also be noted that this album was recorded the day after "Feel so blue" by Lafayette Leake with the same team (Littlejohn included).

Fuyant la violence des ghettos de Chicago, John retourne vivre dans le Mississippi et grave une poignée de morceaux de blues brut pour le label Ace de Johnny Vincent. Il est accompagné par l'harmoniciste Sam Myers. Du blues brut gorgé d'un feeling terrien : "I wanna go home", "I got my nose open", "She's nineteen years old". Bien sûr, il grave ces morceaux en leader mais lors de ces séances, on peut aussi entendre John derrière Sam Myers ou King Edward (alias Edward Antoine).
Fleeing the violence of Chicago's ghettos, John returns to live in Mississippi and writes a handful of raw blues pieces for Johnny Vincent's Ace label. He is accompanied by harmonica player Sam Myers. Raw blues filled with a terrific feeling : "I wanna go home", "I got my nose open", "She's nineteen years old". Of course, he scores these songs as a leader, but during these sessions, we can also hear John behind Sam Myers or King Edward (aka Edward Antoine).

Enregistré dans une salle japonaise, ce concert conjoint de John Littlejohn et Carey Bell retranscrit parfaitement la ferveur et la puissance du Chicago blues. Les musiciens sont tous très en forme (Larry Burton, Willie Kent et le batteur Casey Jones au jeu terriblement excitant). John propose de superbes versions de "Bloody tears", "Hoochie coochie man", "Kiddio" et "Slidin' home". La prise de son est réellement parfaite (ce qui est loin d'être le cas de tous les disques en public). Un album difficile à trouver mais qui vaut vraiment l'écoute.
Recorded in a japanese concert hall, this performance of John Littlejohn & Carey Bell transcribed perfectly fervor and power of Chicago blues. The musicians are all first-rate (Larry Burton, Willie Kent and drummer Casey Jones with his terribly exciting playing). John gives superb versions of "Bloody tears", "Hoochie coochie man", "Kiddio" and "Slidin' home". The sound is really perfect (which is far from the case of all live albums). A hard to find album, but well worth listening.

Après avoir travaillé comme sideman pour Lafayette Leake ("Big piano man"), Buster Benton ("First time in Europe") et Valerie Wellington ("Million dollar secret"), il entame l'enregistrement de son nouveau disque pour Rooster, le label dirigé par Jim O'Neal. Curieusement produit avec une guitare qui se perd un peu au milieu de la section cuivres ultra-puissante (pourtant arrangée par Bill Mac Farland). Malgré cette imperfection, l'album est dynamique, excitant, et mérite vraiment l'écoute : "So called friends", "Chips flying everywhere", l'instrumental "Take one".
After working as a sideman for Lafayette Leake ("Big piano man"), Buster Benton ("First time in Europe") and Valerie Wellington ("Million dollar secret"), he began recording his new record for Rooster, a label run by Jim O'Neal. Curiously produced with a guitar that gets lost a bit in the middle of an ultra-powerful horn section (though arranged by Bill Mac Farland).
