Né dans une famille de musiciens, c'est sa mère qui lui apprend la guitare. Compagnon de route de Robert Johnson, Johnny Shines s'impose comme un des grands noms du Delta Blues. Il grandit à Memphis et joue de la guitare dans les rues de la ville cotoyant Charley Patton, Lonnie Johnson, Howlin' Wolf. En 1932, Johnny s'installe à Hughes (Arkansas), une bourgade proche de Memphis où il exerce le métier de métayer. Dans les années qui suivent, il tente de vivre de sa musique jouant avec Robert Johnson dans les juke-joints locaux (les deux hommes jouent environ 2-3 ans ensemble). En 1941, il s'installe à Chicago. Repéré par le producteur Lester Melrose, il grave 4 titres pour Columbia. Mais ces titres remarquables ne seront malheureusement pas publiés par Melrose. Il faudra attendre 25 ans, jusqu'en 1971, pour enfin les voir exhumer par Pete Welding et son label Testament. Quoi qu'il en soit, ces quatre titres sont superbes et méritent absolument l'écoute : "Tennessee woman blues", "Delta pine blues", "Ride ride mama", "Evil hearted woman blues". D'après certaines sources, le second guitariste derrière Johnny pourrait être Big Bill Broonzy.
Born into a family of musicians, it was his mother who taught him the guitar. Robert Johnson's traveling companion, Johnny Shines has established himself as one of the big names of Delta Blues. He grew up in Memphis and played guitar in the city streets alongside Charley Patton, Lonnie Johnson, Howlin' Wolf. In 1932, Johnny moved to Hughes (Arkansas), a town near Memphis where he works as a sharecropper. In the years that followed, he tried to make a living from his music playing with Robert Johnson in local juke-joints. (the two men play for about 2-3 years together). In 1941, he moved to Chicago. Spotted by producer Lester Melrose, he recorded 4 tracks for Columbia. But these remarquable titles will unfortunately not be issued by Melrose. It will take 25 years, until 1971, to finally see them exhumed by Pete Welding and his label Testament. Anyway, these four tracks are superb and absolutely worth listening to : "Tennessee woman blues", "Delta pine blues", "Ride ride mama", "Evil hearted woman blues". According to some sources, the second guitarist behind Johnny could be Big Bill Broonzy.

Pour le label Chess, Johnny Shines enregistre deux magnifiques titres - "Joliet blues" et "So glad I found you" - avec les musiciens de Muddy Waters (Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Ernest "Big" Crawford). Mais pour ne pas gêner le succès grandissant de Muddy, Leonard Chess n'ira pas plus loin avec Johnny Shines. La sortie du simple est annulée et ces deux chefs d'oeuvre ne paraitront qu'en 1970 dans l'indispensable LP "Drop down mama".
For the Chess label, Johnny Shines recorded two magnificent tracks - "Joliet blues" and "So glad I found you" - with the musicians of Muddy Waters (Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Ernest "Big" Crawford). But in order not to hamper Muddy's growing success, Leonard Chess will not go further with Johnny Shines. The release of the single is canceled and these two masterpieces will be issued only in 1970 in the essential "Drop down mama" LP.

After the successive Columbia and Chess disappointments, Johnny Shines sets down his suitcases at JOB, a small chicago-based label. In three sessions, accompanied by Moody Jones, J.T. Brown, Sunnyland Slim, J.B. Lenoir, "Big" Walter Horton, Johnny gives the best of himself : powerful and very expressive voice, guitar playing in the continuation of the style of his former sidekick Robert Johnson. This short production - a dozen titles in all - remains of paramount importance to classify in the best moments of the Chicago Blues. You have to listen to "Ramblin'", "Fish tail", "Cool driver", "Livin' in the White House", "Evening shuffle", "Brutal hearted woman". But this leading work - poorly promoted by the label - is unsuccessful. Discouraged, he gave up music and became a construction worker.

On the occasion of the Chicago Blues Festival french tour, Johnny sets foot in France for the first time in his life. He plays alone or with others musicians of the tour (Luther Johnson, Dusty Brown, Sonny Thompson) but only the sessions where he plays alone on guitar are issued by Black & Blue (and some duets with Luther Johnson). C'est dommage car l'association de ces deux artistes était prometteuse.

Unfortunately the sound quality is very poor : you can barely hear Johnny Shines' guitar. Therefore, this album does not present any interest. A very consistent program with "Full grown woman", "Razzmadazz", "We're gonna ball", "Here it is brother", "Big John".

Le programme se révèle un peu moins intense que sur "Hangin' on". Malgré tout, on retient "For you my love", "I want you to know", "Mister Blues", "Soul power".

Cette rare cassette relate une séance à Gadsden (Alabama) avec l'harmoniciste Jerry Mac Cain et le guitariste Bart Pate. La voix de Johnny parait désormais plus limitée. Néanmoins, il s'agit d'une bonne séance de blues terrien convaincante et valant l'écoute.
This rare cassette recounts a session in Gadsden (Alabama) with harmonica player Jerry Mac Cain and guitarist Bart Pate. Johnny's voice now sounds more limited. Nonetheless, this is a good, compelling down-home blues session worth listening to.

Sur ce disque co-produit par John Nicholas, Jerry Del Giudice (producteur maison chez Blind Pig) et Edward Chmelewski, on retrouve deux vétérans du label J.O.B. et de la scène chicagoane. Johnny Shines, diminué par des ennuis de santé, se contente du chant et est suppléé à la guitare par John Nicholas. Snooky chante sur quelques faces et joue de l'harmonica sur la majorité d'entre elles. Une séance acoustique sympathique.
On this album co-produced by John Nicholas, Jerry Del Giudice (house producer at Blind Pig) and Edward Chmelewski, we find two veterans of the JOB label and chicagoan scene. Johnny Shines, diminished by health problems, merely sings and is compensate on guitar by John Nicholas. Snooky sings on a few sides and plays harmonica on most of them. A nice acoustic session.
