Né dans une famille baptiste originaire du Mississippi, K.C. est son vrai prénom. Initié à la guitare par son oncle Smith Douglas, il rencontre le bluesman Tommy Johnson à Jackson au début des années 40. Une rencontre déterminante qui l'influencera grandement (il semble que les deux hommes s'associèrent quelques temps). En 1945, il déménage à Vallejo (Californie) puis à Richmond l'année suivante tout en travaillant dans les chantiers navals locaux. Dans le même temps, il s'intègre à la scène blues de San Francisco / Oakland. K.C. enregistre pour le label Down Town de Bob Geddins et obtient un hit régional avec son excellent "Mercury boogie" (qui deviendra par la suite "Mercury blues"). Le titre, gravé avec son ami harmoniciste Sidney Maiden, sera repris par de nombreux artistes comme Steve Miller, Canned Heat, Norton Buffalo, Alan Jackson et deviendra véritablement un standard du blues. Curieusement, il ne retravaillera pas pour Geddins. Un peu plus tard, en 1954, K.C. grave un nouveau simple pour le label Rhythm de Los Angeles avec un petit orchestre resté anonyme ("Lonely blues", "K.C. boogie").
Born in a baptist family from Mississippi, K.C. is his real name. Introduced to the guitar by his uncle Douglas Smith, he met bluesman Tommy Johnson in Jackson in the early 40's. A decisive meeting that will greatly influence him (it seems that the two men formed a partnership some time). In 1945, he moved to Vallejo (California) and Richmond the following year while working in local shipyards. At the same time, he became integrated into San Francisco / Oakland blues scene. K.C. recorded for Bob Geddins' Down Town label and get a regional hit with his excellent "Mercury boogie" (which later became "Mercury blues"). The title, cut with his friend harpist Sidney Maiden, will be covered by many artists like Steve Miller, Canned Heat, Norton Buffalo, Alan Jackson and truly become a blues standard. Curiously, he never worked again for Geddins. Later, in 1954, K.C. cut a new single for the Los Angeles' Rhythm label with a small unknown orchestra ("Lonely blues", "K.C. boogie").

En 1952 ou 1954, il est repéré par la chanteuse blanche Barbara Dane qui l'introduit dans le circuit des bars et des clubs de Berkeley. Grâce à cette nouvelle notoriété, il trouve l'opportunité de graver son premier disque complet. Enregistré par le folkloriste Sam Eskin à destination du public étudiant blanc sur le minuscule label Cook, ce LP édité en 1954 n'eut à l'époque que peu de succès. Aujourd'hui, c'est une pièce de collection. K.C. y montre magnifiquement ses racines du Delta et son apprentissage auprès de Tommy Johnson (il lui reprend d'ailleurs "Canned heat blues"). Son interprétation est particulièrement soignée et la qualité sonore cristalline. Beaucoup de superbes moments émaillent ce microsillon : "Catfish", "Big road blues" et son excellent "Mercury blues".
In 1952 or 1954, he was spotted by white singer Barbara Dane who introduced him to the circuit of bars and clubs in Berkeley. Thanks to this new notoriety, he finds the opportunity to cut his first complete album Recorded by folklorist Sam Eskin for white student audience on the tiny Cook label, this LP issued in 1954 has never earned success. Today, it is a collector's item. K.C. shows his beautifully Delta roots and his apprenticeship with Tommy Johnson (indeed, he covered Johnson's "Canned heat blues"). His performance is particularly polished and the sound quality is crystal clear. Many beautiful tunes punctuate this LP : "Catfish", "Big road blues" and his excellent "Mercury blues".

On some tracks K.C. is alone, on other tracks he is accompanied by his friend Sidney Maiden, collected at various locations in april-may 1960 by Chris Strachwitz. These sides are excellent ("Night shirt blues" or the remarkable "Chicago blues" in which K.C. accompanies Sidney Maiden).

Issu des mêmes séances que le disque précédent, on retrouve donc les mêmes grandes qualités à celui-ci. Il y a peut-être ici plus de reprises - très convaincantes pour la plupart - comme "Canned heat", "Catfish blues", "Bottle up and go", "Key to the highway". Globalement, il s'agit également d'un album remarquable qui vaut largement l'acquisition.
