COMPLETE EARLY RECORDINGS vol.1 & 2Blue Eye (only on mp3) July 1963 - November 1971 |
Big Bill Hill. Celui-ci lui organise sa première séance d'enregistrement en juillet 1963 chez USA Records ("Like heaven to me", "Honky tonk"). Daughter of a sharecropper living not far from Memphis, she moved to Chicago in 1953 with her husband Robert "Pops" Taylor. She begins by singing in the city clubs and is discovered in 1962 by Willie Dixon through D.J. Big Bill Hill. He organized his first recording session for her in july 1963 at USA Records ("Like heaven to me", "Honky tonk"). Koko also cuts a few informal tracks for Spivey in march 1964. But, her career took off when Dixon signed her to Checker (a subsidiary of Chess) in 1964. The following year, she triumphed with a cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Wang dang doodle". His career is definitely taking off even if her production at Chess, generally high level, also includes uneven moments. In parallel with her work for Chess, she also records a single for the Willie Dixon's Yambo label ("Instant everything" with the guitar of "Mighty" Joe Young). This collection - compiled by Gérard Herzhaft - brings together all the material recorded in the studio by Koko Taylor between 1963 and 1971. |

WHAT IT TAKES - THE CHESS YEARSChess - MCA Hip-O June 1964 - June 1972 |
Sa première séance lui permet d'accoucher d'un superbe "I got what it takes" accompagnée d'un groupe superbe : Walter Horton, Lafayette Leake, Buddy Guy, Robert Nighthawk, Jack Meyers, Clifton James. I'm a little mixed up", "I got all you need", "What kind of man is this", "29 ways", "Blue prelude". There are also several tracks with heavy arrangements that seem less interesting. These 2 CDs offer a good overview of this first work by Koko Taylor. |
