Il passe son enfance à chanter dans les chorales de l'église. Arrivé à Chicago en 1951, Johnny rejoint les Highway QC's, un quartet de Gospel avec lequel il reste de 1956 à 1964 (ou de 1957 à 1961 selon les sources). Ils enregistrent même pour Vee-Jay. Au milieu des années 60, Johnny quitte le groupe. Il travaille alors dans une usine et fréquente les clubs du West Side après sa journée de travail (il sera le bassiste d'Otis Rush). Dès 1968, il est à la tête de sa propre formation de Blues. Pendant 15 ans, il joue dans les clubs de Chicago mais reste dans l'ombre. Découvert par Chico Chism qui dirige le label Cher-Kee, Johnny peut enfin graver son premier simple en juin 1982 (accompagné par les frères Stanley & Vernon Banks) produit par Roosevelt Burnett : "I gotta sad feeling", "Ain't gonna worry about tomorrow". Ces morceaux seront réédités par Jimmy Dawkins sur son propre label Leric. Johnny enregistre d'ailleurs deux autres simples pour Leric les années suivantes. On retient de cette première oeuvre le pur Chicago blues "New life" et "Luv somebody" plus Soul (avec la belle guitare de Vance Kelly). Sur ce CD, on retrouve 4 morceaux de "Little" Johnny Christian sur les 6 qu'il a enregistré pour Leric.
He spent his childhood singing in church choirs. Arriving in Chicago in 1951, Johnny joined The Highway QC's, a Gospel quartet with which he remained from 1956 to 1964 (or from 1957 to 1961 according to other sources). They even record for Vee-Jay. In the mid-1960's, Johnny left the group. He then works in a factory and attends the West Side clubs after his day work (he will be the bassist of Otis Rush). In 1968, he headed his own blues band. For 15 years, he plays in Chicago clubs but remains in the shadows. Discovered by Chico Chism who runs the Cher-Kee label, Johnny can finally record his first single in june 1982 (accompanied by brothers Stanley & Vernon Banks) produced by Roosevelt Burnett : "I gotta sad feeling", "Ain't gonna worry about tomorrow". These tracks will be reissued by Jimmy Dawkins on his own Leric label. Johnny also records two more singles for Leric the following years. From this first work, we can point out the pure Chicago blues "New life" and the more Soul "Luv somebody" (with beautiful guitar by Vance Kelly). On this CD, we find 4 tracks of the 6 "Little" Johnny Christian recorded for Leric.

A la fin des années 80, "Little" Johnny Christian trouve enfin l'opportunité d'enregistrer son premier album complet pour le label Big Boy. Entre Chicago Blues et Soul, il démontre qu'il est un superbe chanteur. Bien supporté par un groupe compact (dans lequel figure Vernon "Chico" Banks), il propose une poignée de titres accrocheurs comme "All because of your love", "I want to know", "All of your love" ainsi qu'une très belle reprise de "End of the rainbow" de McKinley Mitchell. Suite à cet album, Johnny put participer à une tournée sur le sol européen à la fin de l'année 1990.
In the late 80's, "Little" Johnny Christian finally finds the opportunity to record his first full-length album for the Big Boy label. Between Chicago Blues and Soul, he demonstrates that he is a superb singer. Well supported by a compact backing band (in which Vernon "Chico" Banks appears), he offers a handful of catchy titles like "All because of your love", "I want to know", "All of your love" and a very nice cover of "End of the rainbow" by McKinley Mitchell. Following this album, Johnny was able to participate in a tour in Europe at the end of 1990.
