MULE

Fat Possum

February 1995

On apprécie, en particulier, "Diggin' mommas tatters", "Bad times in Mississippi", "Rob and steal", "Mad dog on my trail", "Kitty kat", "Coal black mare".

A native of Mississippi, he learned guitar at a young age with his father and played at local parties as a teenager. Paul notably played with James "Son" Thomas while working as a welder. Thanks to musicologist and producer Robert Palmer, he was able to record his first album for the Fat Possum label. For the occasion, Paul was accompanied by Big Jack Johnson and Sam Carr. He delivers raw and exciting Delta Blues with a raspy and expressive voice. We can particularly highlight "Diggin' mommas tatters", "Bad times in Mississippi", "Rob and steal", "Mad dog on my trail", "Kitty kat", "Coal black mare".

On pourra sauver de ce désastre "Don't laugh at me".

For his second album, Paul — accompanied only by a drummer — recorded with producers Matthew Johnson and Bruce Watson who transformed his Delta Blues into uninspired saturated Garage Rock. He sings well but his guitar is often horribly overamplified and the arrangements are too heavy. "Don't laugh at me" can be salvaged from this disaster.

For his third and final album (recorded in Detroit), Paul Jones worked with producer Matthew Smith. A relatively uninspired Delta Blues album with a rather flat production. Unfortunately, he died of cancer the following year.
