Quatrième de six enfants, fils des fermiers David et Emma Jackson, il apprend l'harmonica dès l'enfance. Sam quitte le foyer familial à 12 ans exerçant différents petits métiers et jouant de son harmonica dans la rue. Dès le milieu des années 30, il devient un habitué des medicine-shows souvent avec son ami Pink Anderson. Découvert par Bruce Bastin et Pete Lowry en 1970, il trouve l'opportunité de graver un premier disque. Sam y joue de son harmonica avec ferveur dans la tradition appalachienne et chante avec gouaille. Il est accompagné des guitaristes Baby Tate et Henry "Rufe" Johnson. Véritable songster, il joue blues, rags, vaudeville, airs folkloriques avec un dynamisme contagieux. Il y a aussi deux monologues qui devraient intéresser l'amateur confirmé.
Fourth of six children, son of farmers David and Emma Jackson, he learned harmonica from childhood. Sam leaves the family home at 12 years old exercising various small jobs and playing his harmonica on the streets. From the mid-1930's, he became a regular artist for medicine shows, often with his friend Pink Anderson. Discovered by Bruce Bastin and Pete Lowry in 1970, he found the opportunity to cut a first album. Sam fervently plays his harmonica in the Appalachian tradition and sings with banter. He is accompanied by guitarists Baby Tate and Henry "Rufe" Johnson. A true songster, he plays blues, rags, vaudeville, folk tunes with contagious dynamism. There are also two monologues which should interest the confirmed fans.

Ce disque capture la retranscription exacte de ce qu'était un medicine-show. Peg Leg Sam, gouailleur et exubérant, en est le principal protagoniste aidé parfois par Big Chief Thundercloud (alias Leo Kahdot), rancontant des histoires, jouant de son harmonica. Un disque intéressant pour comprendre comment fonctionnaient ces spectacles itinérants mais qu'il vaut mieux conseiller à l'amateur confirmé car il y a finalement peu de musique par rapport aux moments parlés.
This disc captures the exact transcription of what a medicine show was. Peg Leg Sam, joking and exuberant, is the main protagonist sometimes helped by Big Chief Thundercloud (aka Leo Kahdot), telling stories, playing his harmonica. An interesting record to understand how these traveling shows worked but that it is better to advise the confirmed fans because there is ultimately little music compared to the spoken moments.

Peg Leg Sam est ici en compagnie du guitariste Louisiana Red (sur la moitié de l'album) et de ses producteurs Kent Cooper et Hainer Stadler. Une séance de Piedmont Blues campagnard plutôt sympathique certainement plus facile à aborder pour l'auditeur occasionnel que les albums précédents. On peut ressortir "Navaho trail", "Going train blues", "Strollin'", "I got a home".
Peg Leg Sam is here with guitarist Louisiana Red (on the half of the album) and producers Kent Cooper and Hainer Stadler. A rather nice country Piedmont Blues session certainly easier to approach for the casual listener than the preceding albums. We can highlight "Navaho trail", "Going train blues", "Strollin'", "I got a home".
