D'origine créole, ses parents - Ben Lewis et Elvina Broussard - cultivaient le riz autour de Lake Charles (Louisiane). Après avoir vécu quelques temps au Texas, la famille s'installe à San Francisco en Californie. Elle apprend l'accordéon avec son frère Al Lewis (futur Al Rapone). Ida se marie avec Raymond Guillory et travaille comme conductrice de bus. Mais, en parallèle, elle devient la première femme à diriger un orchestre Zydeco. Débutant une longue collaboration avec le label GNP-Crescendo dirigé par Gene Norman, Queen Ida délivre son premier album en 1976. Dans celui-ci, elle ne joue que de l'accordéon laissant le chant à son frère Al Lewis (également producteur). Il s'agit d'un habile mélange de Zydeco, Country, Cajun avec de superbes titres comme "Rosa majeur", "Je vas revenir", "Creole de Lake Charles", "Hey negress". Elle apparait également à l'affiche du San Francisco Blues Festival et du Monterey Jazz Festival.
Of creole origin, her parents - Ben Lewis and Elvina Broussard - were rice farmers around Lake Charles (Louisiana). After living in Texas for a while, the family moved to San Francisco, California. She learns the accordion with his brother Al Lewis (later known as Al Rapone). Ida marries Raymond Guillory and works as a bus driver. But, at the same time, she became the first woman to front a Zydeco band. Beginning a long collaboration with the GNP-Crescendo label run by Gene Norman, Queen Ida released her first album in 1976. In this one, she only played the accordion, leaving the vocals to her brother Al Lewis (also producer). It is a skilful mix of Zydeco, Country, Cajun with superb titles like "Rosa majeur", "Je vas revenir", "Creole de Lake Charles", "Hey negress". She also appears at the San Francisco Blues Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Ce second album est construit sur le même modèle que le premier : un beau cocktail de musique louisianaise entre Zydeco et Cajun enluminé par le superbe accordéon de Queen Ida. On apprécie en particulier "Frisco Zydeco", "Colinda", l'excellent blues "Moi tit feye O'paradis", "Mal d'amour", "C'est la vie". Derrière Ida, on trouve son frère Al Lewis (chant, guitare, co-producteur avec Hewlett Crist), son fils Myrick Guillory (percussion), Gerald Haynes (basse) et Jimmy Jenkins (batterie). On note aussi l'apparition du violoniste Steamin' Freeman.
This second album is built on the same model as the first : a beautiful cocktail of Louisiana music between Zydeco and Cajun illuminated by the superb accordion of Queen Ida. Une tracklist intense et inspirée avec en particulier "Capitaine Gumbo", "Mon paradis", "Corps solide", "Grand Basile", "La femme du doigt" ou encore "Papiers dans mes souliers" (une reprise du "Paper in my shoe" de "Boozoo" Chavis). Queen Ida est brillante à l'accordéon.
In this third album, we still find an excellent anthology of traditional Louisiana music. An intense and inspired tracklist with in particular "Capitaine Gumbo", "Mon paradis", "Corps solide", "Grand Basile", "La femme du doigt" or "Papiers dans mes souliers" (a cover of "Paper in my shoe" by "Boozoo" Chavis). Queen Ida is brilliant on accordion.

Queen Ida once again offers a beautiful cocktail of traditional Louisiana music in this live album. Produit par Neil Norman et Robert Margouleff, cet album reste le plus abouti de Queen Ida. La tracklist reste intense, dansante, excitante du début jusqu'à la fin : "Zydeco", "C'est moi", "I-10 express", "Dancing on the bayou", "Hard headed woman". Son orchestre est un peu plus étoffé qu'à l'habitude avec l'ajout de cuivres. Peu après l'enregistrement de cet album, en 1990, elle édite même un livre de recettes intitulé "Cookin' with Queen Ida".
Produced by Neil Norman and Robert Margouleff, this album remains Queen Ida's most accomplished. The tracklist remains intense, dancing, exciting from start to finish : "Zydeco", "C'est moi", "I-10 express", "Dancing on the bayou", "Hard headed woman". Her orchestra is a little bigger than usual with the addition of horns. Shortly after the recording of this album, in 1990, she published even a cookbook called "Cookin' with Queen Ida."
