Très éclectique, Rockin' Sidney a mélangé de nombreux styles musicaux : swamp-pop, rock & roll, rhythm & blues, cajun, blues, zydeco. En plus de cet éclectisme, Sidney Semien est aussi un multi-instrumentiste de talent sachant jouer guitare, harmonica, piano et accordéon. Né à Lebeau (Louisiane), Sidney apprend, dès l'enfance, la guitare. Adolescent assez précoce, il accompagne son oncle Frank Semien à la guitare et à l'harmonica. Puis, assez rapidement, il monte son propre groupe Sidney Semien & His All-Stars avec des membres de sa famille (Ernest, Francis, Roger). Son premier enregistrement date de 1956 (il a 18 ans à l'époque) chez Goldband. Mais, Sidney ne reste pas dans la célèbre firme et grave une poignée de morceaux pour Carl, Fame et surtout Jin (1958-63) sous la supervision de Floyd Soileau. Le LP Flyright fut longtemps le seul témoignage de la première oeuvre de Rockin' Sidney pour tous ces petits labels régionaux. Plus tard, la firme anglaise Ace édita "My Toot-Toot", un CD plus focalisé sur la période Jin couplée avec des titres des années 80 provenant de divers albums.
Rockin' Sidney, a very eclectic musician, mixed many musical styles : swamp-pop, rock & roll, rhythm & blues, cajun, blues, zydeco. In addition to this eclecticism, Sidney Semien is also a talented multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, harmonica, piano and accordion. Born in Lebeau (Louisiana), Sidney learned guitar from childhood. A precocious teenager, he accompanied his uncle Frank Semien on guitar and harmonica. Then, quickly enough, he formed his own group Sidney Simien & His All-Stars with some members of his family (Ernest, Francis, Roger). He made his first recording in 1956 (he was 18 at the time) in Goldband. But Sidney did not stay in the famous firm and cut a handful of tracks for Carl, Fame and especially Jin (1958-1963) under the supervision of Floyd Soileau. The Flyright LP was long the only one to collect the first work of Rockin' Sidney for all those little regional labels. Later, the english firm Ace issued "My Toot Toot", a CD more focused on Jin period coupled with titles from the 80's coming from various albums.

Sa collaboration avec le label Goldband dura une dizaine d'années (1965 - 1975) et donna une trentaine de faces. Parfois accompagné de Katie Webster, Sidney propose une oeuvre attachante et sous-estimée. Pourtant, cette production possède plusieurs points d'interêt comme "My river", "Shed so many tears", "Life without love", "Boogie in the mud" aux accents Swamp, le bluesy "Old happy days blues", "Gotta keep on pushing" (avec la guitare de Chester Randle). Il faut aussi écouter les quelques titres enregistrés avec The Dukes ("Feel delicious", "Do your stuff"). Une oeuvre sympathique - malheureusement négligée - qu'aucun CD n'est encore venu rassembler. Il faut donc chercher ces différentes anthologies pour trouver les faces Goldband de Rockin' Sidney. Sur l'excellent CD "The funky side of Goldband / Anla records" sont aussi compilés des titres de Sidney pour le label Bold ("Boogie's boogie shack", "Back door man").
His collaboration with the Goldband label lasted ten years (1965 - 1975) and gave thirty sides. Sometimes accompanied by Katie Webster, Sidney proposes an attaching and underestimated work. However, this production has several points of interest such as "My river", "Shed so many tears", "Life without love", the Swamp-influenced "Boogie in the mud", the bluesy "Old happy days blues", "Gotta keep on pushing" (with the guitar of Chester Randle). You should also listen to the few tracks recorded with The Dukes ("Feel delicious", "Do your stuff"). A nice work - unfortunately neglected - that no CD has yet come to collect. It is therefore necessary to seek these different anthologies to find the Goldband sides of Rockin' Sidney. On the excellent CD "The funky side of Goldband / Anla records" are also compiled Sidney titles for the Bold label ("Boogie's boogie shack", "Back door man").

Sidney joue de tous les instruments ici et a enregistré ce disque chez lui à Lake Charles. Il obtient un immense succès avec "My Toot-Toot" qui se vendra à près d'un million d'exemplaires. En fait, ce morceau bénéficiera de la promotion faite par Cleon Floyd (frère du chanteur King Floyd) à la Nouvelle Orléans. Le succès s'étendra rapidement aux Etats-Unis et au-delà. Avec les revenus que lui procure ce morceau, Sidney achète la radio KAOK et construit son propre studio à Lake Charles. Il monte aussi le label ZBC qui édite plusieurs de ses disques. Hormis ce célèbre titre, on trouve beaucoup de morceaux enjoués et entrainants au tempo rapide : "Let me take you to the zydeco", "Jalapeno Lena", "My zydeco shoes", "Alligator waltz". La boite à rythme n'est pas toujours du meilleur effet et engendre une certaine uniformité de rythme.
Sidney plays all instruments here and recorded this album at his Lake Charles' home. He get a huge success with "My Toot Toot", that will sell almost a million copies. In fact, this track will benefit from promotion by Cleon Floyd (brother of singer King Floyd) in New Orleans. Success will extend rapidly in the United States and beyond. With the income generated by this success, Sidney bougth KAOK radio and built his own studio in Lake Charles. He also founded the ZBC label which published several of his discs. Apart from this famous title, there are many playful and catchy up-tempo songs : "Let me take you to the zydeco", "Jalapeno Lena", "My zydeco shoes", "Alligator waltz". The drum machine is not always the best effect and creates a certain uniformity of rhythm.

Christmas evocation rather vapid and repetitive with bells ringing and festive atmosphere. Despite some interesting moments, this is a minor album in Rockin' Sidney discography.

Ayant crée son propre label - Bally Hoo - il sort cet album dans lequel il joue de tous les instruments. Sidney grave celui-ci dans le studio qu'il s'est installé chez lui. Le résultat peut paraitre parfois simpliste mais récèle plusieurs morceaux intéressants comme "I got the blues for my baby", "Rock and roll me baby", "Joy to the south", "Lonesome for my baby".
Having created his own label - Bally Hoo - he released this album in which he plays all the instruments. Sidney cut it in the studio he built in his home. The result can sometimes seem simplistic but has several interesting pieces like "I got the blues for my baby", "Rock and roll me baby", "Joy to the south", "Lonesome for my baby".

Ce disque fut enregistré sous la supervision de Floyd Soileau, Mark Miller et Sidney lui-même au studio Master Trak à Crowley. Accompagné notamment de Katie Webster (piano), Thomas Schreve (guitare) et Willie "Tee" Trahan (saxophone), il assume le chant, l'accordéon et l'harmonica. Un disque qu'on peut ranger assurément parmi ses meilleurs avec d'excellents blues ("Sweet lil' woman", "Slim's Y-kee kee"), des boogies ("Boogie for me") et du zydeco ("Cochon de lait") mais aussi "If I could I would" et "She's my morning coffee".
This LP was recorded under the supervision of Floyd Soileau, Mark Miller and Sidney himself in the Master Trak studio in Crowley. Notably backed by Katie Webster (piano), Thomas Schreve (guitar) and Willie "Tee" Trahan (saxophone), he assumes singing duties, accordion and harmonica. A record that can certainly be ranked among his best with some excellent blues ("Sweet lil' woman", "Slim's Y-kee kee"), boogies ("Boogie for me") and zydeco ("Cochon de lait") but also "If I could I would" and "She's my morning coffee".

Sur la grande majorité des titres, Sidney joue tous les instruments. Ses lignes d'accordéon sont simples et dansantes mais le son demeure trop compact et monolithique. La boite à rythme en guise de batterie n'est pas toujours agréable à écouter et les choeurs plaqués et maladroits également. Tous les morceaux datent de 1986 sauf "I'm your man", un blues gravé en 1984 avec Katie Webster. Notons aussi que Sidney s'aventure bien au-delà du blues et du zydeco sur ce disque empruntant à la musique cajun et au swamp-pop. Un album à réserver aux fans confirmés de Rockin' Sidney. Attention, la version JSP et la version ZBC ne possèdent pas tout à fait les mêmes titres.
On the vast majority of titles, Sidney plays all instruments. His accordion lines are simple and dancing but the sound remains too compact and monolithic. Drum machine is not always pleasant to listen and choirs sometimes awkward. All songs are from 1986 except "I'm your man", a blues recorded in 1984 with Katie Webster. Note also that Sidney ventured well beyond blues and zydeco on this disc taking some elements from cajun and swamp-pop. An album for confirmed fans of Rockin' Sidney. Beware, the JSP version and the ZBC version do not have quite the same titles.

On trouve ici la reprise d'un ancien titre "No good woman", une incursion inattendue dans le funk ("Funky attitude") et quelques morceaux intéressants comme "Corrine", "Kinfolk zydeco", "Don't need no husband". Le son de la batterie électronique enlève beaucoup de charme à la musique. Sa fille Agnes "Creola" Semien chante sur certains titres.

L'ensemble s'avère très inégal et parfois ennuyeux malgré quelques réussites : "I'm your man", "Waltzing zydeco", "Nonc E. Zebb", "Somebody got my woman". Encore une fois, on déplore une batterie assommante qui gâche de nombreux titres ("Zydeco woman", "Zydeco is fun", "Big weekend zydeco"). Un disque un peu fourre-tout qu'on conseillera aux amateurs éclairés. On signalera que ce CD reprend deux titres provenant du LP "Squeeze that thang".
