Issu d'une famille de musiciens (son père Henderson Chatmon joue de plusieurs instruments), il apprend rapidement la guitare. Ses frères Lonnie Chatmon et Bo Carter (alias Armenter Chatmon) fondent le fameux string-band Mississippi Sheiks qui remportera un immense succès. Sam fera, d'ailleurs, occasionnellement partie de cette fameuse formation autour de 1930. Avec son frère Lonnie, il forme les Chatman (ou Chatmon) Brothers, une association guitare / violon qui enregistre une poignée de titres sympathiques en octobre 1936 pour Bluebird. Au début des années 40, Sam s'installe à Hollandale, non loin de Greenville ou il exerce différents métiers : ouvrier dans les plantations, veilleur de nuit.
Born into a musical family (his father Henderson Chatmon plays several instruments), he quickly learned the guitar. Brothers Lonnie Chatmon and Bo Carter (alias Armenter Chatmon) founded the famous string-band Mississippi Sheiks who wins a huge success. Sam will, moreover, occasionally part of this famous formation around 1930. With his brother Lonnie, he forms Chatman (or Chatmon) Brothers, a guitar / fiddle association which recorded a handful of nice titles in october 1936 for Bluebird. Early 40's, Sam moved to Hollandale, near Greenville where he held various jobs : plantation worker, night watchman.

Dans cette longue séance pour Chris Strachwitz, Sam Chatmon interpréta plusieurs morceaux mais seulement un petit nombre seront édités sur disque. A noter que certains proposés dans le microsillon seront absents du CD et vice-versa. Toujours est-il que cette séance aboutit sur de superbes titres qui méritent assurément l'écoute : "I have to paint my face", "Hollandale blues".
In this long session for Chris Strachwitz, Sam Chatmon sang several songs but only a few will be issued on record. Note that some of them proposed in the LP will be absent from the CD and vice versa. The fact is that this session leads to stunning titles that certainly deserve listening : "I have to paint my face", "Hollandale blues".

Après sa redécouverte par Chris Strachwitz, Sam attire l'attention de Ken Swerilas, un amateur de blues de San Diego. Celui-ci l'enregistre en 1966 mais les bandes restèrent inédites. Ken l'introduira aussi dans le circuit des clubs de San Diego. D'ailleurs, Sam partagera longtemps sa musique entre San Diego et sa ville d'Hollandale. Sur ce microsillon (jamais réédité en CD), il est capté par John Fahey et Nick Perls pour le petit label Blue Goose. Toutes ces pistes sont du même haut niveau : jeu de guitare très sûr, précis et imaginatif, excellent chanteur, répertoire vaste entre blues, ragtimes et airs traditionnels. "B&O blues", "Love come falling down", "Blues in E", "Brownskin woman blues", "Cold blooded murder blues" figurent parmi les meilleurs morceaux.
After his rediscovery by Chris Strachwitz, Sam draws the attention of Ken Swerilas, a San Diego blues enthusiast. He records him in 1966 but the tapes remained unreleased. Ken also introduce him in the San Diego clubs circuit. Besides, Sam will share his music long time between San Diego and the city of Hollandale. On this LP (never reissued on CD), he is captured by John Fahey and Nick Perls for the small label Blue Goose. All these tracks are of the same high level : very secure guitar playing, precise and imaginative, excellent singer, vast repertoire between blues, ragtime and traditional tunes. "B&O blues", "Love come falling down", "Blues in E", "Brownskin woman blues", "Cold blooded murder blues" are among the best pieces.

Doté d'une prise de son très satisfaisante, il s'agit, par conséquent, d'un album recommandable et qui vaut l'écoute. A la fin du CD, on trouve deux morceaux où Sam est accompagné d'un string-band (baptisé pour l'occasion The California Sheiks). Entre blues et ragtime, on peut relever "God don't like ugly", "Prowlin' groundhog", "I can't use you no more", "Old screwdiver", "Crawlin' kingsnake", "My little woman".
Constituted of several sessions taken between 1970 and 1974 by Lou Curtiss in San Diego (and Ken Swerilas for two tracks), this disc presents Sam in excellent shape : his fingerpicking guitar playing remains accurate and efficient. With a very satisfactory sound recording, it is, therefore, a worth listening recommendable album. At the end of the CD, we find two titles in which Sam is accompanied by a string band (named for the occasion The California Sheiks). Between blues and ragtime, it can be noted "God don't like ugly", "Prowlin' groundhog", "I can't use you no more", "Old screwdiver", "Crawlin' kingsnake", "My little woman".

Les guitaristes Sam Chatmon et Walter Vinson sont associés à Carl Martin (mandoline, violon) et Ted Bogan (basse) pour faire revivre le plus célèbre des string-bands. Les quatre musiciens s'étaient réunis pour jouer au festival Folk de l'université de Chicago en janvier 1972. Le mois suivant, ils réalisent ensemble ce microsillon pour le label Rounder. La musique traditionnelle jouée ici s'avère plutôt plaisante quoiqu'un peu monotone par moments. Ce microsillon n'a jamais été réédité en CD.
Guitarists Sam Chatmon and Walter Vinson are partnered with Carl Martin (mandolin, violin) and Ted Bogan (bass) to revive the most famous string-band. The four musicians were gathered to play at the Folk Festival of the University of Chicago in january 1972. The following month, they play all on this LP for the label Rounder. The traditional music played here is rather pleasant though somewhat monotonous at times. This LP has never been reissued on CD.

Gravé au domicile de Sam à Hollandale par Giambattista Marcucci, Sam propose encore une excellente et agréable prestation. On retrouve sa verve et son inspiration dans "Open your book", "Stoop down baby", "Baby please come back to me", "Black night", "I'm crazy about her loving". Plusieurs éditions ont vu le jour : la plus complète étant le CD "Blues at home vol.2" (Mbirafon) qui reprend les séances initiales d'aout 1976 avec des titres inédits de juin 1982.
Recorded at Sam's home in Hollandale by Giambattista Marcucci, he still offers excellent and pleasant music. We find again his verve and inspiration in "Open your book", "Stoop down baby", "Baby please come back to me", "Black night", "I'm crazy about her loving". Several editions have emerged : the most complete being the CD "Blues at home vol.2" (Mbirafon) which gets the august 1976 initial sessions along with unreleased tracks from june 1982.

Comme d'habitude, il chante son répertoire qui s'étend du blues au ragtime en passant par divers airs traditionnels.
Produced by T.C. Wilkins, Sam is accompanied here by Colin Linden (guitar) and Jim MacLean (harmonica, percussion). A nice album recorded in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. As usual, he sang his repertoire ranging from blues and ragtime through various traditional tunes.

Dans cette célèbre série compilant les field recordings de Siegfried Christmann et d'Alex Küstner, on retrouve Sam Chatmon au soir de sa vie (il a environ 81 ans au moment des enregistrements). Six titres sont publiés : un seul dans "The introduction" et les cinq autres dans "Blues on Highway 49". Malgré l'âge, Sam délivre parfaitement ces superbes pièces acoustiques (en particulier "Sam's blues").

Ces bandes figurent parmi les dernières de Sam Chatmon. Captées par Michael Hortig, elles souffrent d'une prise de son assez faible (on entend le chien de Sam aboyer à plusieurs reprises) et Sam, lui-même, semble bien fatigué. Après une dernière apparition au Mississippi Delta Blues Festival en 1982, Sam décède en février 1983 et est enterré dans sa ville d'Hollandale. La chanteuse-guitariste Bonnie Raitt a financé la pierre tombale sur laquelle il est inscrit "Sitting on the top of the world" (d'après un célèbre morceau des Mississippi Sheiks). Avec sa femme Elma Lue Chatmon, Sam eut un fils qui se lança également dans le blues (Sam Chatmon Jr ou Singing Sam).
These tapes are among the last of Sam Chatmon. Captured by Michael Hortig, they suffer of a rather weak sound quality (you can hear repeatedly Sam's barking dog) and Sam himself seems tired. After a final appearance in the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival in 1982, Sam dies in february 1983 and is buried in his city of Hollandale. The guitarist and singer Bonnie Raitt paid the headstone on which it is written "Sitting on the top of the world" (after a famous track of the Mississippi Sheiks). With his wife Elma Lue Chatmon, Sam had a son who also engaged in blues (Sam Chatmon Jr or Singing Sam).
