Elle apprend le piano à 5 ans puis chante avec les Chi-Town Instamatics à 12 ans. Elle tourne ensuite avec Lee "Shot" Williams. Valerie étudie le chant au conservatoire et joue le rôle de blueswomen célèbres au théatre (Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith). Elle apparait également à la télévision. Dès 1982, elle se tourne vers le Blues, chantant dans les clubs de sa ville natale Chicago (Kingston Mines, B.L.U.E.S). Très vite, ses talents extraordinaires de chanteuse la propulse au premier plan. Pour ce premier album, elle est entourée d'une pléiade de superbes musiciens comme Magic Slim, John Primer, John Littlejohn, Sunnyland Slim, Billy Branch, Casey Jones parmi d'autres. L'album est d'abord remarquablement produit par Jim O'Neal et Valerie elle-même. Il regorge de pépites remarquables. Beaucoup de reprises jouées avec goût et inspiration : "Million dollar secret", "Cold cold feeling", "Smokestack lightning", "Love don't love nobody". Mais aussi quatre compositions originales de Valerie dont "Independant blues" et "You can't have my monkey". Il y a deux titres additionnels sur la version CD.

In 1982, she focused on Blues, singing in the clubs of her hometown Chicago (Kingston Mines, B.L.U.E.S). Very quickly, her extraordinary talent as a singer propels her to the foreground. For this first album, she is surrounded by a host of superb musicians like Magic Slim, John Primer, John Littlejohn, Sunnyland Slim, Billy Branch, Casey Jones among others. The album is first remarkably produced by Jim O'Neal and Valerie herself. It is full of remarkable gems. Many covers played with taste and inspiration : "Million dollar secret", "Cold cold feeling", "Smokestack lightning", "Love don't love nobody". But also four original compositions of Valerie including "Independant blues" and "You can't have my monkey". There are two additional titles on the CD version.

Gravé à Chicago pour un label japonais sous la supervision du producteur Chicago Beau. Malgré la présence d'excellents musiciens, le programme manque cruellement d'originalité. Il n'y a que des reprises de standards du Blues mais joués de manière trop classique et sans surprise. Un disque très décevant de la part d'une chanteuse comme Valerie Wellington. On notera quand même une curiosité : le titre "Trouble in mind" est chanté en japonais. Malheureusement, elle meurt d'une rupture d'anévrisme au début de l'année 1993.
Recorded in Chicago for a japanese label under the supervision of producer Chicago Beau. Despite the presence of excellent musicians, the program is sorely lacking in originality. There are only covers of Blues standards but played in a too classic and unsurprising manner. A very disappointing record from a singer like Valerie Wellington. However, we note a curiosity : the title "Trouble in mind" is sung in japanese. Unfortunately, she died of a cerebral aneurysm in early 1993.
